COLLEGIATE ESPORTS DIRECTORS!!! The news today around CECC as well as just getting reacquainted with the space and leagues this semester has reinforced my opinion of the space. We are dangerously close to approaching a point that collegiate esports stops growing, and even regresses a little bit before just settling into remaining exactly what it is now. Last year while I had time away from running a program I created what I personally believe is a league format and structure that answers some key questions in the space for “varsity” programs. I met with over 40 coaches and directors and walked them through everything. I received overwhelmingly positive feedback from them as well as stakeholders not working directly for a university, and continued to make tweaks based on suggestions. I want to be 100% clear in that it was NOT designed to be another answer to club level or social/community first program competition or inclusion. It was not made to exclude clubs and they’d be more than welcome, but it definitely wasn’t made to cater to them. This format can be propped up and launched sustainably with 60 schools participating in the first year. I have 0 interest in bringing investor money into collegiate esports, so honestly it’s the only way it can be launched as far as I’m concerned. If you, your program, or your conference would want to hear the format and see if it’s everything I say it is then please reach out. I’d love for this to exist even if it’s someone else running it. The universities, programs, coaches, and directors making serious investment into the competition side of this space deserve to have something created that’s tailored to them.
