@DingusM36997574 Select the heaviest ewe lambs. These are the first born singles. Not sure how this is improves anything genetically.
English

@colinearl2 Retain the heaviest ewe lamb progeny from these as replacements. Because they are tested in a high density environment soon only those that can rear fast growing twins will be identified. Rinse & repeat. After 2 or 3 generations, you will have elite sheep!
English

@colinearl2 Our experience indicates otherwise. It is a paradigm. They used to say merino sheep would not lamb at 12 months. How did that turn out?
I suggest you suck it see.

@DingusM36997574 How does this system select a ewe which produces the most $/Ha. All system selection ideas I have come across have inbuilt fallacies.
English

@colinearl2 Fertility genes are just a distraction. The end game is net$/ha. This is achieved by allowing the system to select the animal that performs best in your production system. Litters are not the best fit.
English

@DingusM36997574 Seems to work for the pork industry. Multiple times the efficiency for meat production of the lamb industry.
English

@consettfarming If you use very low birthweight terminals you shouldn’t have a problem. My experience is that you may have better results using White Suffolks. All lamb production systems give better growth rates when using terminals.
English

@colinearl2 Can you put a Dorset over them if you're not worried about wool on the lambs? Or does dystocia become a problem
English

@DingusM36997574 What do mean breed is irrelevant. A gene that increases scanning rate by 60% in breeds which have lower fecundity is hardly irrelevant.
English

@colinearl2 Respectfully, that statement is incorrect. Breed is largely irrelevant.

@James_Stacey_ @Reece_Mason1 You can try a Multimeat merino which have a 23-24 micron fleece plus 200% scanning.
English

@Reece_Mason1 Just don’t run cross bred ewes, it’s either Merinos or shedders!
English

@stationmum101 @jcressw3 Hmm 🤔 think you are being a little hard on yourself.
English

@consettfarming @DavidSandow1 Sorry, the X axis is the mating weight of the ewes not weight per hectare.
English

@BenDooley8 By too fat I mean no more than CS3 and then they need to gain 15 kgs before lambing.
English

@colinearl2 Yep, but then you get light ewes that have trouble lambing, small lambs, and increased chance of losing all 4.
