All about energy and what that means for people, in relation with the rest of the world. With technology we can all live well, with room for nature to flourish.

Today I'll stop posting on this platform. This was a long time coming, but this place is only getting worse. If you want to follow me, you can do so on @collectifission@greennuclear.online on Mastodon (also reachable on Bluesky and a myriad of other places). So long 👋

@ethangach @ID_AA_Carmack > There's a bot that is undressing women without their consent That's crazy! Women are going about their lives when a robot shows up in their home or office or — gasp! — the street and undresses them in public!? I miss the days when art bois would simply imagine in Photoshop.

It would be nice if some of the Twitter diaspora returned. So many creatives, but also many developers, that generally enriched the experience are no longer active. Those that performatively left and those with a seething hatred of Elon probably won’t be back soon, but a lot of people just disengaged on vague cultural grounds that can be reevaluated. There are probably some technical tweaks to the algorithm that could make them more comfortable. I don’t mind the existence of independent echo chambers that people are happy within. There is only a problem when some echo chambers are allowed and others aren’t. Reach out to lapsed friends!

The predicted rise of climate terror groups has finally occurred. As German climate activist Tadzio Mueller warned in 2022: “If society doesn’t want to change, you need to impose costs on the society. On everybody, not just on the polluters” The group, the Vukangruppe (Volcano Group) that carried out today’s attack on Berlin power cables—that cut electricity and heating to 45,000 households, 4 hospitals, 74 care homes, 20 schools and much of southwest Berlin’s public transport system—is the same group that carried out arson attacks against a transmitter tower in 2021, an electricity pylon near a Tesla gigafactory in 2024, and power cables last September that left another 50,000 households without electricity for days. In the modern world, electricity is life, most especially in winter. Berlin is currently covered in snow amidst a cold snap delivering freezing temperatures. People die from blackouts. At least the original German terror group that surely inspires them, the Red Army Faction, aka the Baader-Meinhof Gang, mostly stuck to assassinating wealthy industrialists and former Nazi SS officers. But this “Green Army Faction” holds *everybody* responsible for climate change, including the poor, the sick in hospitals, and the elderly in care homes. Some news reports are describing the Vulkangruppe as “left wing”. It is nothing of the sort. For once, the normally ridiculous term “eco-fascist” actually applies.

@Leigh_Phillips The 'manifesto' was filled with strange language constructs, only making sense if it was translated from Russian. So, Russian state attack.

I find the number of people replying along the lines of "did you consider building nuclear power plants?" very funny. All these new people having no idea I've been arguing for nuclear energy since I started this account. On that note: the NPE aims for 56 TWh of nuclear capacity by 2050. That's about 8 GWe of nuclear capacity, or five EPR units if you want to put it like that. This is, in my view, very conservative. It would indeed be great to build 11 more EPR units to cover this 135 TWh of planned solar capacity. But hey, you don't need to convince me. As for the people who can't find these targets, I got them from the minister answering questions to a member of parliament last year. You'll want to scroll to question 6: zoek.officielebekendmakingen.nl/ah-tk-20242025…

Just to point out how stupid this meme is, I'll use some Dutch numbers. The first is part of the National Plan Energy System 2050 (NPE). 1. We aim for 135 TWh of solar energy. 2. The yield for solar energy in the Netherlands is about 0.043 TWh / square kilometer / year. 3. This leads us to 3139 square kilometers of solar parks. This is about the area of the province of Overijssel. 4. The Netherlands has 50 square kilometers of car parks. Half of this can be covered by solar panels. Also, the Netherlands has around 300 to 600 square kilometers of roofs that could be used for solar panels. That leaves short of ... 2500 square kilometers in the best case scenario. Sure, let's cover our car parks, great idea in fact, but let's not pretend that'll be the final word on this matter.

@collectifission You just proved how silly solar energy is (for large scala energy needs) 3000 sq km....is 10% of the total land area of the country.

@collectifission can you give me a screenshot of that 135tWh aim, i searched for it but couldnt find it. Dutch consumption in a year is 110tWh and 21tWh are already produced from solar, besides that you have 32tWh of wind, so that 135 tWh doesnt seem right

@JohanVeldh35629 @FollowTheScien4 No energy sources have "absolutely no waste"... It's really annoying renewabros are simply ignoring the piles of highly toxic waste the solar and wind industry creates.
