Any significant restoration of “localism” transcends the exclusive material concerns of production and consumption and begins to develop an integrative disposition considering relationships, ecology, culture, ethical life, higher virtues, and eventually the soul.

@Empty_America There’s that project in Tennessee where the Claremont guy is planning a traditional town and settlement. I think they’ve bought the land. We’ll see how they do with it.

With the partial exception of Libertarians, people on the "right" side of the spectrum are incapable of moving anywhere in a group and doing anything. But Libs can take over entire states, start colonies in the Costa Rican jungle, reclaim major cities, etc.

Why can't a few crypto bros buy a dead industrial town in the upper midwest with rusted old factories, rebuild them, start manufacturing products there, hire Americans (only) massively, and then sit back and watch as it becomes an idyllic hub of peace and prosperity for young families.

I'm no longer a catechumen! After two years of catechumenate, I received Chrismation, was given the name Nicolau (after Saint Tsar Nicholas), and took part in the Eucharist. Pray for me, as now my life as a Christian has truly begun!

It is my birthday, friends. I've lived another year. If you told me a few years ago I'd not only still be alive, but that I'd be married, propertied, expecting a child, and earning my daily bread by writing essays, I wouldn't have believed you. I was completely ready to die a most dishonorable death. Frankly -- I yearned for it. Instead, the Lord had other plans. Always listen for His whispers; watch for His direction. No matter how low you might be, you have no way of knowing what wonderful things may be up ahead. Many blessings may be waiting around the bend, and sooner than you'd ever expect, life could get very, very, very good. Cheers to thirty-one years, God bless you all. Time for a steak and a scotch.

@koalacathns @shagbark_hick The vast majority of converts to Orthodoxy in the West do so for theological reasons, and (unfortunately) sometimes political reasons. Most people I have met did an examination of both in depth before choosing Orthodoxy.

@shagbark_hick Most western converts to orthodoxy do so purely because they can’t overcome their hatred of Catholicism. So they can still continue to crap on Catholics but with all the new smells and bells and ridding of the Protestant failures

I do think it should be considered quite telling that any efforts to bring Western tradition into the world of Eastern Orthodoxy are hotly controversial and often despised by Orthodox people. These (very few, kind of LARPy) practioners of "Western Rite Orthodoxy" are professing loyalty to the Antiochian Patriarchs, saying the Credo in the Eastern style, and basically doing everything Eastern Orthodox do albeit in Latin and with Western aesthetics. They would appear to be "Orthodox" in all the ways that would count to an EO authority. But it is basically not good enough. Total abandonment of Western tradition and aesthetics is the only way to satisfy whatever urge has driven many Westerners to become Orthodox. I've seen this myself in my own travels, visiting dozens of Orthodox Parishes. Like the schism itself, the Filioque and the question of Papal authority are simply containers for a number of grievances which are essentially aesthetical and anti-Western in nature. This works very well for formerly secular Westerners who've been innoculated with a latently anti-Western disposition, and for former Evangelicals who want traditional faith but cannot disabuse themselves of anti-Catholicism. Totally strange corner of Christendom; the fact that it is discussed at all belies what a weird moment we are now in. Of course, "Western Rite Orthodoxy" is doing fine in reality. It is the largest Church on earth, with 1,280,000,000 members -- and the Patriarch of Antioch has nothing to do with it.

The Anti Western Rite crowd are irrational and dishonest If the WR doesn’t convert mass amounts of Westerners then they claim it’s a failure but if it does convert them then they question if the converts are truly Orthodox. If the WR retains its organic elements like altar rails then they claim it’s lacking and propose innovating the Rite with some sort of Iconostasis but if a Rite like the Gallicans actually goes through with changes then they call it a dead archaeology project. They’ll claim that the pre-schism Western Saints belong to us but don’t actually believe that these Saints are worthy of liturgical or devotional emulation, as if you can properly understand these Saints divorced from their Rite. They claim to adhere to the consensus of the Saints but can’t name one canonical Saint who spoke against the WR and refuse to concede to the Saints who say it is good. They’ll ask where the WR Saints are and when I provide an example with Dom Denis, a miracle worker, they slander him and refuse to see his merits. God forbid you like “realistic Icons”, statues and Western architecture, only Russians and Romanians are allowed to use our contributions and even then, the Anglo and Jewish converts are here to educate you on how this is a bad thing and that they know better than Orthodox nations. If someone can’t be pleased by the Western Rite, it’s because they don’t want to be, it’s all fallacious adhoc nonsense from unserious people whose legacy will amount to tweets and obscure livestreams. A sad existence.

In your charity, please pray for my mother, who was admitted into the Oncology Urgent Care last night. EKG measured massive increases in lung metastases; morphine isn't helping, she's on oxygen awaiting a Cat Scan. Might be the beginning of the end. She's 51. God help her.
