@BenisonMrs I assume the answer to this so sorry for asking, but is the difference when it comes to fundations/wilsons and a picture being presented w a letter - like apple, solely for the purpose of the recall of the sound and why it is used and effective? I know it only starts the lesson

It should be obvious, but it is not always so. Understanding one's instructional goals is essential to effectiveness and instructional decision-making. I have heard so many teachers struggle with the lack of pictures in some decodable texts for novice readers, so much so that many have gone ahead and created the pictures for every decodable. I think Dr. Timothy Shanahan's words can do a world og good here: "Six-year-olds are more interested in looking at pictures of monkeys than at the letters m-o-n-k-e-y. Consequently, when presented with a word and picture, they peruse the graphic rather than studying the letter sequence. At best, their attention is split, reducing the likelihood of learning. But ...If your aim is to build vocabulary knowledge, however, the picture is a bit different (yes, an intentional pun, forgive me). For this, pictures can be beneficial. Studies show that providing a graphic representation of words – even of abstract words – can increase understanding and retention (e.g., Coyne, McCoach, Ware, Loftus-Rattan, Baker, Santoro, & Oldham, 2022)." That said, he also stated that: "Pictures may initially compete with the words in comprehension, but they’re essential for helping kids to gain coherent representations of what they read. The trick is neither to avoid the pictures nor to allow them to overwhelm the words." Nuance... Please take the time to read this blog post.

@Beanie0597 When speaking about relationship building and its importance/non importance outside of just teaching, do you think there is a big difference elementary teachers and upper grade teachers should approach this theory with?

@ninja_maths My last school taught through CGI (cognitively guided instruction). At the same time I was teaching mult./division (3rd grade) w/ memorization. The difference of mastery was what you would think it would be. Most my class could not add/sub w regrouping, but knew their times table

One thing that concerns me about math education at the primary school level is the idea that every math concept, no matter how trivial, needs to be explored for days on end using countless models and manipulatives in order to provide students with a "deep understanding" of these ideas. I'm all for kids at all levels developing a rich understanding of math, both conceptual and procedural. However, if you apply the "let's explore this trivial idea to the nth degree" to every single math concept, what happens is that the really important stuff (automaticity with math facts, fluency with procedures) gets pushed to the back burner, resulting in kids that are have not achieved automaticity with their math facts or procedures, and are therefore unprepared to tackle algebra.

@EnriqueForRI @pvdcitycouncil I wonder if the council went back to see the effect voting no had last year on Providence students already in an established charter school who needed space to house all their students and teachers - it broke into 2 campuses. My guess no

@JamesAFurey When we call home, how do we decide on if we call mom or dad? I can assume where teacher”s first instinct is, and I know my own - so I try and have a convo at the start of the year w parents about calling home (more so for the elementary teachers)

We need more men involved in education. And I don’t just mean teachers here. I’m talking about DADS. Guys, get involved. This is not just mom’s job.

@caitsveto I dont understand the strategy - now for the next few weeks anyone could nominate her, saying she’s already been up so it keeps blood off their hands. Maybe it will turn out great. But historically, once you are up, you are an easy target w this as the reasoning #BB27

@riptwittee @TrumpUpdateHQ @GavinNewsom Doesn’t that just prove they make way more money? Because of what they have invested there? Maybe I’m reading what you are saying wrong - but it sounds like you just proving it’s incredibly true, not false.

@TrumpUpdateHQ @GavinNewsom This is incredibly false on every category. California simply has more industries that are incredibly productive. Highest grossing state in Agriculture, Entertainment, technology, tourism just to name a few. Texas is remarkably less free with a worse power grid than California

California Crackup? Try again. California provides $83.1 billion more than we receive from the federal government. Texas? Receives $71.1 billion more than they provide to the federal government. 71% of the U.S. GDP comes from blue counties.

@JamesAFurey I had to write a thesis for my undergrad program in art therapy. I had to student teach for my masters in education. I dunno that either prepared me for a job after. But student teaching did make sense over writing a thesis.

I’ve heard this sort of thing a lot, so I guess I’ll just come out with this little known fact: You don’t need to defend a thesis to get a Masters of Education. I’ll intern this year and complete a portfolio. That will be the most rigorous part of the program.

@KUNTAKUNTY A lot of people were told it as kids and so grew up thinking it was normal - but at some point it’s their responsibility to learn and not go through life without some awareness of offensive things that have been used negatively against different demographics

@pulte You could technically pay for a programa (it was like $4.99 for me) where you could add it to your credit score so that rent counted. I have been doing it for years. Will it no longer cost for this option and will just count?
