Stalin once ripped all the feathers off a live chicken as a lesson to his followers.
He then set the chicken on the floor a short distance away.
The chicken was bloodied and suffering immensly, yet, when Stalin began to toss some bits of wheat toward the chicken it followed him around.

This is as good a time as nay to remind ourselves why our force is called An Garda Síochána - "guardians of the peace", and not Police - "enforcers of the law". A law enforcer's loyalty is to the statute book. A guardian of peace answers to the community, and ours is losing it rapidly.
When the Garda was founded in 1922, the name was a conscious break from the RIC and what it represented. Legitimacy was meant to flow from the people, not the crown, not the moneyed class.
Worth keeping in mind for the next time someone in government demands zero-tolerance enforcement, it needs community involvement and approval.

Whilst the Irish government send in police and army to violently assault peaceful protesters, arresting them, pepper spraying them in the eyes, whilst they're stood, unarmed, closing their bank accounts and fining them €1000 each and removing their drivers licence, they put out a statement to tell the Iranian Regime that Iranians have the right to protest and are entitled to freedom of expression.
