Me trying to explain that whenever I point out Clark’s flaws it’s not hate or Lex's virtues it's not excusing him but me trying to acknowledge the ways both of them are interesting and contradictory

@chirpi_575 @PinUpWulf Lex is an interesting case bc he’s more popular than ever but there are a lot of stories that honestly mischaracterise him and give him the most random roles to try and tie him to the shared universe. Many DC fans are just ignorant about Superman too ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@PinUpWulf if they actually bothered to read any decent depiction of lex i doubt they’d hate the ship so much. admittedly some versions of lex are quite awful but that kinda applies to a lot of comic characters

It’s shit like this that gets to me No one says you have to like a ship, but bashing it like this just to put people who like the ship down is such abhorrent behavior and something I’ll never stand for

@narmbo I try to avoid the likes of Disney villain and Wicked discourse but it always comes across like people are presenting their subjective nostalgia as fact and unable to comprehend the concept of retellings.

@narmbo I find the way people on here talk about villains and go after villain fans so tedious 😭 I don't know how to explain that I do not think it is pressing that we return villains back to their former glorious status of being one-dimensional!

just because someone has different priorities in how they enjoy fiction doesn't make them a bad person. i actually find refusal to engage with anything that has grey morality/nuance to be harmful to one's emotional development.

@Dumbass799 @UuultraCatLex Yeah. They were Marvel Guys, and that’s what DC editorial wanted. In a way I think that entire era of DC was driven by Marvel envy… But I think the results were a lot better when they let Marvel Guys write Superman while keeping the pre-crisis canon e.g. Gerber Phantom Zone.

@comicsclx @UuultraCatLex A LOT of Marvel's decision have historically been about trying to be more like Marvel, down to the Crisis on Infinite Earths reboot itself.

It's kind of disappointing to love DC's post-Crisis era for all the great comics they gave us but for my favorite hero and villain, it was one of their worst eras 😭 I just hate Byrne's Lex Luthor with all my heart

@UuultraCatLex I have Feelings about how post-crisis Superman tried to emulate the Marvel formula, and how much of it didn’t work at all. But it’s kinda sad to me that people think that era is peak without realising how derivative it was while scorning elements that Superman actually innovated.

@UuultraCatLex The more Marvel I read, the more I realise that Byrne and Wolfman just turned Lex into a stock standard Marvel villain. Like, the “businessman masking criminal activities” schtick is right out of their wheelhouse 😭

And the same retcon was part of what gave Magnus depth and sympathetic traits, so they are the reason for who the other is on both an in-universe and a meta level.

Sorry to #cherikpost on main but it’s interesting to me that they tried from the beginning to give Charles depth via a personal rival. They tried it with Juggernaut, with Lucifer… but it didn’t really click until they did it with Magneto

I really like pre-crisis Lex! I like the cautionary tale revenge narrative. I like that he was a villain underdog, an outcast, a criminal scientist who ruins his own life with his obsession with his nemesis. I like all Lexes at least a little, but he's the blueprint.

@CLARKENTISM And I guess in general I'm drawn to stories which are about Clark's mistakes. The examples in the comics of his duty as Superman clashing with his personal relationships, and how he was not always kind or fair to the people around him as a result always stuck with me.

@CLARKENTISM I actually find this being the source of their conflict and contributing to the breakdown of their relationship really compelling. As a transference of those themes, an evolution of the characters and as a meta commentary on Superman...

the way lex fans hate clark for not telling him the truth in smallville is the same as me hating lex for not allowing clark to have a secret and being a nosy fuck the entire time 👎

@CLARKENTISM ...But I feel the point that was continually made was that keeping that big a secret from the people he loves is personally harmful for Clark and keeps him isolated throughout his life. Even if his reasons are understandable and sympathetic, it didn't make it the "right" choice.

@CLARKENTISM Honestly I think my perspective on The Secret is informed by being a fan of pre-crisis... because this was the dynamic Clark originally had with Lois, not Lex. Obviously there were a lot of differences between the situations and she wasn't remotely shady...
