@privmatu Her extended family somewhat openly runs a huge welfare fraud operation in Cologne. The joys of multiculturalism.

@yslenjoyer Really not an expert on internal Russian aerospace dynamics, but there should've been a post-Soviet way for them to retain at least one Airbus style company capable of producing competitive civilian and military aircraft. It's been such a shitshow of half-hearted DOA projects.

@ntrickett16 Very popular among old guard left politicians in Europe in the first weeks of the war. Then mostly an American online phenomenon afterwards.

@mat1_u He was an OK leader, Germany probably would’ve been a bigger shit show post-Bismarck under other monarchs. Just a terrible strategist, but that's more of a German thing in general. Germans are tacticians, not strategist.

@actsmaniac It's no surprise that the AfD was founded in 2013 after CDU/FDP finally secured a majority for a term, but largely continued doing SPD style politics. It's hard to see German political outcomes being very different if the SPD had won a majority in every election since 1998.

At this point I think many people vote AfD simply as an anti-SPD vote. They voted FDP and CDU before and still got the SPD in government blocking big changes. But AfD is the biggest current party that will definitely not form a coalition with the social democrats.

@nobodyknows2322 The left wing of the German FDP is pretty much the closest proxy you get to the American Democratic Party. Socially liberal, with market liberal convictions, but willing to make a lot of SocDem concessions.

Thousands of people on this stupid website alternate between asking why we can't build things anymore and throwing toddler tantrums about AI and nuclear power and basically any form of new infrastructure. You are why. Fuck all of you.

@yslenjoyer Most European navies consist of a couple of capable ships that are however unable to do much on their own. I could totally see a scenario where they’re integrated into UK-led strike groups. Don't think there’d be much opposition to that in Germany for example.

@commanderbrks Also, one could argue that Britain cannot possibly shift to a US-like role in NATO without further integration with European naval structures. Also, the naval construction and procurement situation for the RN is somehow one of the worst on the planet rn.

@yslenjoyer Imo, the UK should just totally neglect its land forces and focus primarily on its navy. In a couple of years, European NATO will have plenty of land and air capabilities against the only plausible foe. Having one nation with reliable, US navy-like capabilities would be amazing.

@commanderbrks They can't, and they've had multiple crises over increasing MOD spending. This has been a discussion topic for like 15 years at this point. In my opinion, it's fiscally irresponsible, but the MOD desperately needs it, and putting it off for so long has made the situation worse.

@Borderlander_P @nikicaga East German industry was technologically stuck in the 50s-60s. Nothing that wouldn't have been at the significant expense of the West German taxpayer (who was already spending enormous amounts, and still is, by taking all East Germans into their welfare state) could've been done

East Germany was already much poorer (and regardless of socialist successes, the transition was bound to suck) and the people mostly wanted the culture and institutions smashed more than West Germans did It sucks for the 10-20% hardline socialist there, but they were a minority
chimera@chimeraxmachina

What’s it called when two countries merge but only one of the two has its culture and institutions smashed, its people thrown into poverty, and a decades long crusade is waged to convince everyone it was evil in all regards because “unification” doesn’t seem quite accurate

@PunishedRWR "Anti-imperialists" complaining about NATO admitting Eastern European states that voluntarily decided to join is ironic because it assumes Russia has an inherent imperialistic claim to decide the foreign policy of these countries

@eugyppius1 German boomers dumping millions into saving a practically dead whale is kind of like German boomers voting to kill the German economy to supposedly save the environment

The whole whale rescue was basically an op to ship Horst off to die in the Atlantic while assuring childish naive Germans he was swimming free on uncle’s farm next to that childhood Bernese their dad totally didn’t put down when they were seven.
eugyppius@eugyppius1

A dead humpback whale has washed up on the shore of the Danish island of Anholt. It is most likely the corpse of Horst the Whaletard - 200km south of where he was freed. He was making his way stubbornly back towards the Baltic.
