One of the activities we did yesterday involved processing difficult feedback from the past. An engineer commented that it helped them "hear the feedback differently and the opportunity to change differently. It was a useful exercise in compassion for them and myself." 💙 Love to hear that.

I'm excited to see everyone tomorrow for the live virtual Compassionate Coding workshop! We'll be talking about how to give and receive feedback with a mix of assertiveness and compassion. Do you have to act on every piece of feedback you’re given? Absolutely not! People tend to give feedback based on their own values, needs, and—alas—biases. You’re the one who gets to decide whether acting on the feedback aligns with your core values and goals. Next week’s workshop isn’t just about giving feedback, but also receiving. We’ll work through a framework for gleaning value from feedback, no matter how poorly it’s originally delivered. 😅 Sign up below ⬇️

Let’s say you’re upset about something at work. You can choose to be - passive by staying quiet - aggressive by hurling insults or threats - passive-aggressive by rolling your eyes or making sarcastic jokes (The latter two sadly perform well on social media.) Or… you choose to be assertive by firmly communicating your needs while respecting the dignity of others. It’s always an option; it just takes some practice and internal work to have it readily available in tough situations. This is one of the topics we’ll explore more deeply in next week’s workshop.

A culture of toxic positivity can prevent teams from having the difficult conversations required for growth. One of my most cited talks is Compassionate—Yet Candid—Code Reviews. The truth, though, is that was barely scratching the surface! Speaking up to voice high-quality, caring feedback and knowing which feedback to take and which to ignore starts from the inside—our core values, emotions, intentions, insecurities. The benefits, though, are great: improved relationships with coworkers, increased productivity, continuous personal growth, and a sense of empowerment. The upcoming feedback workshop will go deep on this subject to help you strengthen this skill and express yourself assertively, as well as compassionately.
