@GearoidReidy I doubt you'll find many American taco purists. They've been one of the top vehicles for fusion foods.

@wantan_tabetai @nizgu Respectfully, I think HPL is not a great writer. His prose is filled with unnecessary adverbs and adjectives, and his plots are repetitive. But he also had nightmares, and in his era, it was truly alien stuff. The climax of every HPL story is intense, filled with vivid imagery.

@GearoidReidy Also strange to describe him as loyal to the LDP. He left the party in the 90s. That, not running against Abe, was the original sin that his opponents in the party wouldn't forgive. Moreover, he led his own (admittedly small) faction - hardly a foot soldier.

The one thing that he very much did not do was try to unite the LDP. On day one, he sought to sideline his enemies - fine if you think you have the power to do it, which he didn’t - which is also why he wasn’t a great politician, which requires compromise.

RobertPlausible@HQuestion2

All they ever did was mock Ishiba. He was never nationalistic enough, he was never socially conservative enough. He dedciated his life to the LDP and served as loyal party footsoldier. But in the end, it didn't matter, they betrayed him anyways. Japan did not deserve him.

@connorcislo For better or worse traditional celebrity culture is filtered through media gatekeepers who are subject to some element of regulation(self-regulation included), which has implications on how crazy one can be whilst still getting coverage

One discussion that should probably happen is around the impact of internet celebrity culture on the national PR system for the upper house elections

@BeijingPalmer @JimMFelton @ProfDaveAndress Fwiw (and also pedantically), it's not only the powerful. The same language is used for victims of traffic accidents and other regular folks. Just a legal technicality about what can be said until a doctor makes the call.

@koreanforeigner I think that is the exact point he's making - Japan needs a more robust security policy considering the current international environment.

Here’s the thing though…I’ve probably been studying politics longer than most* and I know my ish but people are supposed to have political opinions, even if they’re just based on feelings. That’s how democracy works. My expertise counts for as much as your feelings. That’s ok.

@PaulJNadeau Hm, that's fair. I guess I have a lot of thoughts about this and Twitter probably isn't the best format for them.

@connorcislo tbh I think the record is better than people think, it’s more that failures get exaggerated and, being empirical, it’s hard to quantify big changes until we have demonstrable evidence of those changes, which usually means an election that hasn’t happened yet

@HiromuNagahara I was a bit curious because in my experience evangelicals are not the most politically active Christian organization in Japan. Obviously totally different from the US.

@HiromuNagahara Apologies if I missed it, but does it say on his website that he is specifically evangelical (the participation in the Graham event notwithstanding)? I see one event at an evangelical church, but he seems to describe himself generically Christian. (ofc I may be missing context)

@sharp_writing No question that Cool Japan is a flop and I appreciate the sentiment, but my understanding of art history is that it's mostly one of sponsorship.

@koreanforeigner This is (probably) all about the Japanese election in July. Kishida already has a weak hand within the LDP on SK because he is largely held responsible for the collapse of the comfort women deal. After July, he will have years before the next set election.

The window of opportunity to improve ties between South Korea and Japan will not remain open indefinitely. If they fail to improve relations because of Tokyo's arrogance, then we will be back to Square One. And this time, Japan will be to blame.

An unnamed senior Japanese official said a summit might not be held between President Yoon Suk-yeol and Prime Minister Kishida Fumio during the NATO summit because of "the environment where South Korea and Japan can't see eye to eye on historical issues." yomiuri.co.jp/politics/20220…
