@irvine1798 I saw him in UCD when I was a 1st year in 1998. Very impressive man, miles ahead of some other political "heavyweights" who came through those evenings. The comparison to K Mag of the UU's could not have been starker. I always had great time for him after seeing him in person.

David Ervine was a close friend of my family and, in his later years, by all accounts someone practically impossible to engage with in bad faith, regardless of politics. He joined the UVF in 1972 after the killing of my great-uncle, William Irvine, in the Oxford Street Bus Station bombing, believing it was the only way to defend his community around the Newtownards Road. His outlook changed during his incarceration between 1974 and 1980. During that period, he concluded his aims were better pursued through politics rather than loyalist paramilitarism, later becoming an important loyalist advocate of the 1994 ceasefire and the Good Friday Agreement. David was always critical of criminal elements referring to themselves as loyalist and was certainly in his later years the most principled Ulster unionist in opposing bigotry. It goes without saying that he would be disgusted with the state of unionism today - with regards to both the running of loyalist estates by criminals using loyalist paramilitary branding as well as the bad-faith attacks on Irish identity by the DUP and TUV. On a lighter note, I'm told the group he disliked more than any other on God's green earth was the Blues, completely unsurprising given his unwavering support for Glentoran. FTB 🟢⚫🔴
