#Detroit, 1950's-2017. This NE view toward New Center hasn't drastically changed much in 60 yrs. The former Burroughs complex at center is now part of the Henry Ford Health System. Lower center is the last remaining section of 4th St above 94 & Lodge...now a residential island.

This is a question to all to help fine-tune this site. If you could go back to ANY year in Detroit history, what would it be? For myself, it would be 1950...the city near its 2 million population peak...and before "urban renewal" gutted the city.

#Detroit, Michigan between 2nd & 3rd, 1953-2019. This east looking view gives a glimpse of a skid row block that city leaders were anxious to raze (which they did in 1962). Unfortunately, they had no plan on what to replace it with. The old city lighting building stands at right.

#Detroit, Michigan & 1st, 1936-2020. Loop Theatre was built in 1928, closed in 1956 & razed as part of the skid row purge of 1963. The original AT&T building is visible in both images, most prominently in the '36 view from 1st St. The Michigan facing AT&T building went up in 1973

@DetroitStreetVu Serious neighborhood activism prevented the other half of Corktown turning into the “West Side Industrial Area” as well.

#Detroit, Trumbull & Howard, 1956-2020. This attractive, early 20th century building housed a tailor, Melita's Pizzeria, Union barber shop, and an upstairs hotel at the time of this photo. The 1954 article foretold what would happen to the structure...razed for "redevelopment".

As @bruce_katz mentions in this great article, now is the time to think of storefront uses beyond retail. Main Street Regenerators are a key part of this thought process. Stay tuned for more inspiration!

@BrentToderian Walkable retail-wise, the 15 minute city is a false promise in most countries, and this is getting more true by the day.

QUESTION: What’s the most UNPOPULAR position you have about cities that you know for a fact is ABSOLUTELY TRUE?

9/11 was declared the end of capitalism. Three months later, shopping was rebranded as being akin to philanthropy. Now, we're being told going out is over, people aren't coming back to the cities, offices will be a thing of the past. Want to revisit that thesis in a year?

After several years of work today @Mdoucet36 & I handed our manuscript to the production department @utpress In the book, we rephotograph images taken by streetcar enthusiasts to interpret & analyze long-term change in Toronto. Here's a preview & our bio photos (1982 & 2019) 1/3

I’m helping to put together an exciting conversation series to make the case for more attractive and equitable cities - I hope to share more soon. Do you have any suggestions for a leading US thinker on transportation (professional or academic)?

@kentslundberg This is an honor, especially knowing that the 'VCP' in The Hague has been quite controversial (but a success, IMO). I will say it's odd to see the video of the Grote Marktstraat, which is a bicycle-pedestrian collision disaster.

@Indy_Austin Yes, we call them ‘headwalkers’ because you could connect them and walk through the heads of the train. It also translates as a bad pun for front runner.
