I love fics where Ilya gets to see/say that Shane had valid reasons to be afraid & that he was loving & well-meaning but blind to the things Shane would have gone through bcs of his identity. Just bcs the canon author dgaf doesn't mean fic can't do better in these specific places

It can be complex but it feels punitive in fandom where there's impatience with queer ppl being closeted, as if all that's holding them back is themselves. Obvsly that's cause for empathy too, but not acknowledging there can be external harm is putting the onus solely on a person

Fandom loves the internalized homophobia tag a bit too much. Smtms it's not knowing yourself yet, & a lot of times it's fear of actual homophobia from ppl & systems. Internalized homophobia is kind of too simple a shortcut to take in fic to not acknowledge the impact of the world
