Kudos to the Dutch king for this statement. The Dutch have, in fact, been far ahead of others in acknowledging the evils of colonialism. As early as 1900 the Dutch Queen recognized the harm that Dutch rule had done to Java. British royals? Nowhere close.
Ana Lucia Araujo, PhD@araujohistorian

"Today I'm standing here in front of you as your king and as part of the government. Today I am apologizing myself," Dutch King Willem-Alexander becomes the 1st European monarch to apologize for the role of his nation in the Atlantic slave trade and slavery. #slaveryarchive

responsibility for circumstances that harm particular groups is often deflected onto anonymous institutions like “the system,” “the market,” or even “nature.” Guido Sprenger applies theories of personhood from Niklas Luhmann to compare these cases. journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/72…

Colonial apologists: "British colonizers developed India!" Actual British colonizers: "We have succeeded in converting India from a manufacturing country into a country exporting raw produce.” (Chairman of the East India and China Association, speaking to Parliament in 1840)

@conways_law I’d expect consolidation around a few big instances at some point (a bit like what happened to email)

Who is studying how Mastodon will scale as Twitter declines? We're already seeing signs that some servers are getting too busy for their administrators. Won't we see a trend toward an unregulated system of monoliths, possibly a form of oligopoly? melconway.com/Home/pdf/mapca… 1/2

The best solution is clearly for everyone to buy @PriyaSatia’s book so they can find out the truth for themselves…

My comment on @davidfrum 's poor reading of Time's Monster in this unhelpful essay. My book does not describe a "trend" of rejecting "ideals of detachment in favor of a passionate new engagement." Rather it traces a LONG history of damaging political engagement by historians 1/n

@ethan_iverson One of my favorite albums. San Francisco Holiday is particularly fun to compare to the Monk version live at the Blackhawk, especially Billy Higgins’ playing

@OlivierJandot C'est curieux, le titre original est "The Footnote: A Curious History", j'espère que le traducteur explique en NdT pourquoi il a traduit "curious" par "tragique"

@Wordshaper It seems that they are hell bent on insisting that the last millennium of progress on accounting and contract law and fraud protection has been a mistake that can be fixed by blorkchains. Reinventing the wheel, but this time it’s a square because they just discovered the square

It's possible to make the (very Latourian) point that humans did not discover agriculture; instead, agriculture was co-discovered by humans and by crops. Think in systems. theatlantic.com/science/archiv…
