I also dislike the fatalism of the permanent underclass discourse, but am equally tired of people using euphemisms like “transition costs” instead of figuring out how to help the people we know will be impacted
What’s our plan for unemployed college grads and older clerical workers? Retraining programs have an awful track record, and anyway what do we retrain people to? What happens to colleges, healthcare, and the tax base in a world where white collar firm work is no longer the easy path to middle class stability? Plenty of urgent, unsolved, and politically salient questions that do not require a referendum on full automation

i think a lot of people are going to be busier (and hopefully more fulfilled) than ever, and jobs doomerism is likely long-term wrong. though of course there will be disruption/significant transition as we switch to new jobs, the jobs of the future may look v different, etc.

Most people I know in AI think the median person is screwed, and they have no idea what to do about it.
I spent the last 3 months talking to dozens of researchers, economists, and policy experts about AI's impact on work; including reps from every frontier lab and several Congressional offices. Unfortunately, I was not reassured.
The AI industry is raising the alarm, but can't change course. These companies' core business model relies on the disruption they are warning about: their faith in full automation only makes them go faster.
Policymakers are waking up, but still paralyzed by data and debates. Econ wonks disagree on plenty, but even the limited scenario looks like a "painful transition" that will disempower millions of workers.
But an "underclass" is not inevitable, but rather a societal choice — and one we can and should stop. Instead of waiting for impact, we should start planning now to support workers through AI disruption. Whether policymakers can assuage concerns about economic security may determine if we get to reap AI's gains at all.

Design teams should bring back the Bauhaus studio vibe. Read a book for an hour, cut up magazines, play with a new (or old!) technology, mix some paint, try graffiti, make things with no goal. Decouple your value from time and productivity. Explore, and report back your cool findings with the team.

According to his sister-in-law, they returned him after realizing he’s a naturalized U.S. citizen with no criminal record.
