Now that you mention it lot of Soviet Movies e.g. I Ask to Accuse Klava K of My Death (Highly Recommend) remind me of Slice of Life Anime. Since they don't have the budget for special effects, Visuals and production they more than make up for it in Character driven Storytelling.
