@npckhalas hmm I think optimism just changed instead of disappeared. The 80s still had darkness e.g terminator and blade runner but back then optimism was blind and naive . But now we don't blindly believe in automatic optimism we know it has to be earned e.g project hail Mary and Artemis.

I forgot to say the popularity of dystopian societies are also part of this trend. YA fiction like hunger game and it's ilk show a not so optimistic approach to where the worlds heading. and yes, EVERYTHING is political

you can tell how optimistic a society is by how they present the future in media. sounds obvious but then deep how fantastical the future was depicted in like the 80s Vs how it's portrayed post COVID. We don't get Back to the Future anymore, it's just outbreaks and global warming
