@AlecStapp 50% of OPTs are from one country (we all know without looking it up). Just like 70% of H1Bs are one country. Something in me doubts all of the talent US companies are missing are from from one country.

@AlecStapp I love how you act like companies won’t obviously abuse this, get graduates in for much cheaper than they pay an American worker, and know they’re kind of locked in to the company because they are on a visa. So they get better retention and cheaper labor, win-win for the company

Cloudflare is a $100 billion American company with 5,500 employees. Its president and co-founder is an immigrant who was able to build the company in the US because of Optional Practical Training (OPT). Here's what she has to say about the program: “The best thing the U.S. government has done on immigration is OPT to allow international students a chance to stay and work for a time after graduation.” OPT gave her the opportunity to refine “the business plan that helped create the company." Charging a $100k fee on OPT would nuke a critical pathway for recruiting & retaining global talent.

These immigrant founders of billion-dollar companies first came to the US as students. A $100,000 fee on OPT would have lost us many of them. Founders like these would be eligible for an O-1 today, after they've built their companies. But not when they were getting started.

@FerrisB_86 Hearing Neil Everett reminds me of late nights after playing COD ~2010. Him and Stan Verrett doing SC Late Night from LA. Just hearing his voice brings back a rush of memories.

Nostalgia wears people down, but I don’t care, this account is gold. Would wake up and watch the same SportsCenter 3-4 times in a row. The Pirates and Blue Jays vest-jerseys. Clemens vs Maddux on the bottom ticker. Fat Eddie Guardado getting saves for the Reds. Neil Everett and SVP with perfect chemistry and one liners. The play at #1 being somewhat bothersome because there were like 3 others better than it in the top 10.

@_Credible_Hulk If you put a clean shaven shorter cis man in the same role, they wouldn’t care. They literally just care because Elliott Page is trans and the existence of trans people is upsetting to them.

“Yes, the casting of Elliot Page is silly and egregious.” No it isn’t. It’s totally fine.
Ben Shapiro@benshapiro

IMHO, a lot of conservatives are missing the Biblical forest for the woke trees in Nolan's Odyssey. Yes, the casting of Elliot Page is silly and egregious. But here's the thing: Nolan's "The Odyssey" is an apologia for Christian morality poured into a Greek vase. The entire movie is rooted in what Nolan terms "Zeus' law." That law is: "Treat others as you would want to be treated, because anyone might be a god." Now, clearly, there's nothing like that in Greek mythology. It's not implicit in Homer. It's a direct rip from Biblical morality, substituting "because anyone might be a god" for "because man was made in the image of God." Nolan then takes this rule and uses it as his moral glue: the idea is that Odysseus, in utilizing the Trojan Horse, violated Zeus' law and led to full-scale slaughter. That sin has led to the unleashing of broader globalized sin (the "sea peoples" who don't respect Zeus' law and are invading surrounding areas). This is a highly Biblical message: that sin is infectious, and that sin also affects the world at large, not just the sinner. Odysseus has sinned, and he must atone for that sin through self-imposed exile. He must also sacrifice his own aspirations to restore the possibility of a moral universe: because he has unleashed catastrophic violence and violation of Zeus' law -- manifest in the suitors' cynical use of Zeus' law to eat Penelope out of house and home -- he must violate Zeus' law one last time and then accept the penalty, which is exile. This is a not only a movie that will make millions of people go read classical literature again. It also reinforces the idea that violation of the Golden Rule has disastrous consequences. I dunno. I'd consider that, on balance, a large-scale win for civilizational values, when weighed against the woke casting of Elliot Page or the dumbass discussion over whether Lupita Nyongo is good-looking enough (she is, and for the record Diane Kruger is German, not Greek).

Come on it’s builders as well! A first time buyer does not need 2500 sq ft, top of the fixtures and nice appliances, granite, ceramic tile etc… 0% interest rates for years caused this! My first house I bought, I was 30 no kids, my wife and I we SSgts in the USAF. 1,700 sq ft, no upgrades! 76k… kids came two yrs later…

This is why learning basic economics is important! Firms don't maximize price—they maximize profit! If everyone only made expensive products, they'd all be fighting over the same customers. Instead, Firms compete by matching products to different willingness-to-pay.

@_Credible_Hulk Idk why it’s so hard for you to just admit that builders don’t build smaller homes because they can make more on larger homes. It’s basic incentive structure. Why make less money when you can make more money?

@_Credible_Hulk “Arbitrarily” lol yeah it’s usually pretty easy to decipher. Then tell me, why is every new build I see built around here 2400+ sq ft? Whenever I see homes half that size go for sale and even condos that are ~900 sq ft they sell instantly?

@_Credible_Hulk Again, for the millionth time, nobody is arguing that you can’t buy a small dwelling in a shitty place to live today. They argue you can’t buy a small dwelling in a decent place to live.

That’s exactly my point. If they weren’t good enough to make the team, why is it my responsibility—or the government’s—to fund the extra coaching and travel needed to get them there? The parents chose the elite track. They chose the expense. They don’t get to turn that private choice into a public obligation. This entire debate confuses access to sports with subsidizing competitive advantage.

I legitimately hate the whining about travel and club sports. It is a choice. No family is obligated to spend thousands chasing tournaments, private training and “exposure.” You chose that expense. You could save it for college, a vacation or an experience your child will actually remember.
More Perfect Union@MorePerfectUS

The number one problem with youth sports in America is that they've become completely unaffordable. We talked to parents paying up to $25,000 per year for their kids to play sports. Private equity and corporations are turning kids' sports into multi-billion dollar businesses.

@counter_econ 1. That builders aren’t building them. That those that are on the market stay on the market. Two pieces of evidence. Which is more than the zero you’ve provided! 2. Around 45, which is where it has been for decades.

@ConradEduard Is it that they don’t make the team because they are not on clubs…. Or that they are not good enough to make the team At least, in my kids school, there were several non cut sports….. Kids still participated but skill level mattered less

@wayfarer679 Property taxes are straight up extortion. Your home has been taxed, your money has been taxed, the builder has been taxed, why TF should you pay a property tax annually?

@_Credible_Hulk 1. What’s your evidence there are is no market for smaller homes? That’s there’s one condo in a shitty part of town that’s not selling? 2. So what is the average home buyer’s age?

@counter_econ 1. This is just projection. I’ve provided specific evidence. And your response was to say that “well people would buy larger homes”. 2. You know what else is free? critical thinking! Maybe check to see if the claim being made here is actually true!

@counter_econ 1. The margin on a sale that isn’t made is $0. Again, you’ve developed a conspiracy theory to explain your lack of evidence. There isn’t a single market where the price structure is homogeneous like you claim here. 2. The average home buyer isn’t in their 50s.
