Hey Neighbour Festival organisers in trouble over unpaid refunds
The organisers of the Hey Neighbour Festival are facing mounting pressure after ticket holders complained about delayed or missing refunds following the cancellation of the 2025 event, with the matter now drawing legal and regulatory attention.
According to reports, the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud has received dozens of complaints from frustrated festivalgoers who say they have been waiting months for their money. Some tickets, priced between about R1 600 and R3 800, were not refunded on time, despite earlier assurances from organisers that payments would be processed.
The Consumer Ombud confirmed it had attempted to engage the festival organisers, Glen 21 Entertainment, but said communication efforts were unsuccessful, leading to formal escalation to the National Consumer Commission. The commission has the power to investigate and enforce compliance with the Consumer Protection Act, including the possibility of stopping the business from operating if violations are found.
The organisers initially promised that refunds would be completed by a set deadline, but later blamed financial strain and operational challenges after the cancellation of the festival, which was linked to funding difficulties and low ticket sales.
The Hey Neighbour music festival 2025 in Pretoria was officially cancelled in September 2025 following poor ticket sales, funding gaps, and a postponed shift to December. Originally scheduled for August and headlined by Doja Cat, the event was scrapped, resulting in significant ticket holder complaints regarding delayed refunds.
In earlier statements, festival boss Glen Netshipise acknowledged the backlash, saying: “We will refund everyone,” while also asking for patience as the company worked through financial and logistical issues. He further admitted, “We have never been in this situation before,” adding that they were “navigating things that we are not aware of” as refund delays continued.
Despite these assurances, many customers say they have received no money and limited communication, with some turning to legal action and small claims court processes to recover their funds.
