The best thing about working in tech is the persistent and pervasive belief that the world can and will be improved.

UPDATE: God bless the Internet. In particular, god bless Agnes Ola of the UK who, while procrastinating on more important work, found the image on Yandex (yandex.com/images/search?…). Relatively NSFW thread below with images.

At last friends, I can share with you the greatest of all space mysteries. The weird WEIRD painting described in a cosmonaut diary, but which seems to have disappeared. Full comic, featuring @FuSchmu here: smbc-comics.com/comic/the-pain…

Horticulture hot take: Have you noticed that gardens only make sense to the gardener, or someone who's spent time with it, whereas lawns make sense to all visitors? I feel this explains why they're so ubiquitous despite being so insipid.

@stroughtonsmith A bit out of my depth, but is it the focus end of the selection? That is, the corner that you can move with shift+arrow keys, while the other corner is anchored in place.

@andy_matuschak I wonder if we sync up not instinctively, but as a consequence of the physical process? Like metronomes on a board (youtu.be/t-_VPRCtiUg?t=…), you're vibrating an already-vibrating medium. Might explain the sensation too, as you'd physically feel the overtones

This feels like a dumb question, but: why don't we notice *destructive* interference more in vocal harmony? This figure shows constructive interference in a harmonic seventh chord—but that assumes everyone's in phase! Which… they won't be, right? Do we instinctively auto-align?

Sometimes, singing in tight vocal harmony, certain chords locked just right will produce a hair-raising effect: the air buzzes, the sound gets "fuller," goosebumps, psychosomatic tears. I think it comes from overtone overlaps? Sharing rabbit hole and questions so far:

I'm a fast reader, and when subtitles are on, I hate reading the punchline of a joke before the actor has a chance to deliver it. Unfortunately, AFAICT, there's no way to offset playback of subtitles independently of the audio/video on most players. :-/

I would love this, and I would also accept subtitles but with the ability to offset their playback by a few seconds, so the words aren't visible until after they've been spoken.

@viticci They have the horsepower for it without question. I used to play lossless ALAC on my iPod Video, and 16/44.1 audio maxes out at 1.4Mb/s. It’s not very demanding.

@cpmsmith @ZachWeiner That's a word that's doing massive amounts of work there... but yes. "the British colonial government established a tea industry by offering land in Assam to any European who agreed to cultivate it for export." The white man wasn't working the fields himself...

Hey history twitter, question: In lots of context, settler colonialism was done via a corporation, e.g. Mass. Bay Company, New France Company, etc. Was there a general way these companies drew revenue? Land sales? Control of trade? Tax?

@quixoticgeek @ZachWeiner Yeah, so I guess the general theme is importing some natural resource, e.g. furs or spices, in “““partnership””” with the peoples already living there

@spibblez @M0RD3N This is the key difference—I'm guessing it's using nearest-neighbour downsampling, not box blur.
