One of the better discoveries I’ve had and exactly the kind of company I aim to find, businesses nobody else is talking about, was Furuya Metal. Nevertheless, the article only received 18 likes. Today, every article about Sivers gets 10x that amount, even if there have already been 2,000 articles written about it before. Conviction for most people comes from seeing everyone else do the same. We’re herd animals after all. Currently, the newest "bottleneck" (I dislike that term and don't consider it a bottleneck) for AI data centers is power semiconductors. I’ve written two pieces on this topic: one on GaN in relation to robotics and the other on SiC indirectly through Furuya Metal. Back when I wrote about Furuya, I didn’t really talk about SiC. I wanted to keep the article relatively short. But every single SiC wafer starts its life as a bulk SiC crystal grown inside an iridium crucible. Furuya operates in an oligopoly here and holds roughly 30% market share. Every new SiC crystal growth furnace requires at least one iridium crucible (costing around $50,000–200,000 depending on size). These crucibles also have a limited lifespan (typically 50–200 cycles), creating recurring replacement demand. Iridium itself is extremely rare, with very limited annual production. Furuya has long-term contracts with raw material suppliers and is also the market leader in recycling. That means the company benefits twice from rising demand: through higher volumes and higher prices. The market is already extremely tight, which is pushing prices up further. At the time, I found the company very attractive. Today, after a +134% move, the risk/reward profile is completely different. Everyone has to make that decision for themselves. I am not buying at these levels.
