Carney on Canada-Ireland-European integration: Combined, the population is more than twice that of the US. We have a larger cultural export industry and a more diverse one, a similarly sized GDP. Together we are one of the largest economic, cultural, technological, financial blocs in the world.

Carney talks as if Canada can simply swap out the U.S. for Europe. The problem is that Europe is an ocean away, speaks dozens of languages, has different regulations, and doesn’t share the same economic integration, culture, or geography that Canada and the U.S. do. You can’t replace your closest neighbour with a PowerPoint presentation.
