I was the on site Bungie representative for this shoot. It was so freaking cool to see the emotes come to life.

Before doing 11 years at Bungie I spent 13 at Xbox. Today’s news is heartbreaking.

I often think about how FFXIV manages their content releases. They still have the "cursed I have to play 200 hours to get to the latest stuff" problem.
But the investment mechanisms are not what give delight. It's the setting and the story.

I honestly feel that if we were given a content drop as big as and as quality as this final update alongside a story once a year as an expansion, D2 would be in a much different place. I truly believe we were given too much content too fast over the years to know what to do with it all. Too much change made reward for investment feel moot as that requirements for the rewards kept changing. Chase should have never been the objective.

Hell, OG 4-direction emote wheel only shipped because I came in over Xmas break one year and just built the damn thing.

Chis is right. Game prod is tradeoffs and priorities. The tricks we did? Fill idle time. Get 10% done here, another 25% later. Iirc, we shipped without foot vfx. Added that later.
Without filling idle time, it would never have seen the light of day.

@crazystevied This isn’t an evil management thing. It’s, hey this feature costs X engineering/testing/animation budget. Is it critical and more important than 100 other priorities?

Multiplayer emotes were such a fight to get funded. Worth every little trick we did to get them in.

I suppose now I can talk about the work my team and I actually did. At its core we were the Loot part of the Looter Shooter.
We built many of the the loot tables, we set up the vendors, managed currencies and whatnot.
It was fun. 1/3 math, 1/3 phychology and 1/3 feel.
