@rocketfiction I don't have kids but I've the same thing is happening to kids media in general. I think there is a cockanamy idea idea that kids respond to shapes, bright colours, and high pitched voices. I think this is pushed because childhood media informes are tastes later in life.

I’m a dad and an illustrator, but have had the same observation for many years. There ARE still some amazing creators working today, but as a generality—at least, looking at what reaches the mass market shelves and seems to be pushed by the big publishing houses—there is an incredible dumbing down that’s happened.

Am I the only mom who gets annoyed by how ugly the illustrations are in modern children's books? It's like they put effort into making them look horrible and depressing. Why?

Second batch of drawings. I am reuploading because I didn't have a scanner when I first shared them.

About 40 years ago I did this drawing of Conan (on the left) in an attempt to get a job at Marvel drawing him. I wasn’t ready yet, but you can see I was thinking about form and shape. I just didn’t have the knowledge. That took much longer to aquire. Today you can see (on the right) the result of 40 years of study and hard work! All the shapes and contours of the face have to be learned, It didn’t come naturally or easily. Finally, I’m at a place where my art is strong enough to make an impact and tell one heck of a story!! A story you can now read and enjoy called "Mars Madness" by backing ‘Barbaric Adventures” on Indiegogo!! @aaronlopresti @dwamsart @gmartinink indiegogo.com/en/projects/aa…

...speaking of SELF-IMPOSED DESIGN CHALLENGES: I used to make these for fun...an impossible quest to create the dumbest-yet-somehow-plausible aircraft designs

@CitizenRonin There is a possibility that each of those things factored into the change. Artist also mixed their own paints back in the day so that could also be a factor, the industrialization of art supplies.

@creative_fey I'm not really sure. I don't know if it was those things or maybe the introduction of acrylics. It could also be that those methods from back then were just lost as fine art shifted towards crap "modern" art. And the classical realists went into commercial art.

@CitizenRonin I see what you mean. I wonder if some of the changes in the application of colour is also due to the change in perception of colour, with the invention of colour wheels, colour theory, and scientific understanding of colour as light.

@creative_fey I'd say he's close. His paintings are fantastic (Dinotopia). But there is something about those older paintings he doesn't have. There is a vibrancy in application of color and pushing of darks and lights. Gurney is a little more washy to me. More use of white.
