It is time for NATO to go away. It is time to bring our troops back. 🔥🔥🔥 Dwight Eisenhower built NATO. He was its first Supreme Allied Commander, the general who held the line against Soviet expansion when Europe lay in ruins. And in 1951 he said something his modern admirers conveniently forget. He warned that if American troops were still parked in Europe a decade later, the whole project would have failed. He meant it. The deployment was supposed to be a temporary shield, a few years of cover while shattered allies rebuilt. Then they were supposed to carry their own defense. That was the deal. That was 75 years ago. The man who created the alliance never intended for the United States to become Europe's permanent bodyguard. Yet that is exactly what happened. As recently as 2023, America was footing nearly 69 percent of NATO's total defense spending. In 2014, only three of 28 member nations bothered to hit the modest 2 percent target they had all agreed to. The Founders saw this coming. Hamilton argued in Federalist No. 11 that a strong, independent America should never be the junior partner in its own security, beholden to the old world. Washington warned against permanent entanglements that drain a free people. A nation that cannot defend itself is not truly sovereign, and a nation that defends everyone else forever is not truly free. President Trump finally said what every honest leader knew. Enough. Pay your share, or stand on your own. Europe did not like hearing it. But the results speak for themselves. By 2025, all 32 NATO members are projected to meet the 2 percent target, and they have committed to far more. Decades of polite requests accomplished nothing. One president willing to be unpopular accomplished what others would not even attempt. Eisenhower was right. America protects. It does not protect permanently. It is past time our allies stood on their own feet, and past time American taxpayers stopped carrying a burden the architect of NATO himself said should have ended generations ago.
