NANS Moves Against Drug Abuse, Seeks CRIDCOM Support The Chairman of the Cross River State Diaspora Commission (CRIDCOM), Otuekong Chief Otu Okor, FCAI, has pledged support for a student-led initiative aimed at tackling drug abuse across tertiary institutions in Cross River State. Speaking during a courtesy visit by the National Association of Nigerian Students Joint Campus Committee (NANS JCC), Chief Okor said the Commission is willing to collaborate with students on programmes that promote responsible lifestyles and protect young people from the dangers of substance abuse. “This initiative is timely. Drug abuse among young people is becoming a serious concern in our society, and if nothing is done, the consequences in the coming years will be difficult to manage,” Okor said. Chief Okor noted that the Commission shares the concerns raised by the students and is open to supporting initiatives that promote healthy living and positive engagement among youths. “We cannot project a progressive image of our State if our young people are struggling with issues like drug abuse. Initiatives like this show that students themselves are ready to be part of the solution, and the Commission is ready to support such efforts,” he added. Earlier, Chairman of NANS JCC, Victor Antingha, said the student body had launched the Drug-Free Campus Movement to address the growing cases of substance abuse among students. According to him, the campaign will commence with a statewide sensitization rally scheduled for April 10, beginning from the University of Calabar to Millennium Park, where students and members of the public will be educated on the dangers associated with drug abuse. Antingha explained that the initiative will also establish anti-drug campus coordinators across tertiary institutions in the State to sustain awareness and guide students who may require professional support, including collaboration with the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Calabar for rehabilitation assistance. Also speaking during the meeting, an officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service at CRIDCOM, Mr Emmanuel Secondus, cautioned students against irregular migration, popularly known as the “Japa syndrome,” warning that many young Nigerians have fallen victim to fraudulent travel arrangements and exploitation abroad. He advised students to always verify opportunities before travelling and encouraged them to focus on initiatives that promote personal development and responsible living. The engagement ended with the presentation of the campaign flyer and a proposal seeking partnership with the Commission as both sides expressed optimism that the collaboration would help curb drug abuse among students in the State.
