Hi, my name is Léo Caillard and I’m the artist who created the Runestone that was just inscribed into the largest block in Bitcoin’s history. I’m traditionally known for my marble sculptures, carved in my Parisian studio, which find their way into private collections, public spaces, and museums around the world. My process involves starting with a block of marble that I then chisel away at for months until I’m satisfied with what I’ve created. When @LeonidasNFT presented me with the challenge of carving a Bitcoin block into a precious digital stone I was immediately intrigued. Not so different from the enduring nature of marble, I knew that using a Bitcoin block as my medium would allow me to create something that can be appreciated by our descendants. The Runestone is a statement about the permanence of art, whether carved from the earth or coded into the ether. It symbolizes the enduring desire of humanity to make marks that last beyond their lifetimes and to communicate with future generations. Just as the great marble sculptures of antiquity have been preserved through millennia, so too will the Runestone. This endeavor was more than a technical achievement. It is a bridge between past, present, and future, a reminder that art, in all its forms, seeks to capture the ephemeral and make it eternal. I hereby gift the Runestone to the Ordinals community that is pioneering a future where digital art can be as tangible and lasting as any physical piece. I’m releasing it under the CC0 license as I believe this is most closely aligned with the cypherpunk ethos from which Bitcoin was birthed. My hope is that everyone who receives a Runestone in the coming days cherishes it as a reminder of their contribution to Bitcoin in one of its most pivotal moments.
