@heymrsbond Freshmen are an uphill battle all of the first semester, and then they start to figure it out in January and it’s somehow so much easier. But every year (six so far), I do have to remind my freshmen to wear their own shoes on their own feet at least once.

@heymrsbond @historysandoval @Tim_Walz We also have a graphic novel about the Bill of Rights in our textbook, and last year students made a movie poster to advertise one of the amendments to the constitution using images/taglines

@heymrsbond @historysandoval @Tim_Walz One of my English III teammates teaches the Declaration of Independence as a breakup letter—and then has the kids write breakup speeches for their own lives (breaking up with their phones, etc.)

@heymrsbond Truly wild! The nonsense you’re being exposed to is making me triple down on my commitment to all paper assignments for at least the first quarter of the school year, because the students think better on paper (and can’t resort to AI/plagiarism as easily).

@heymrsbond Ana Luisa may be what you’re looking for—most of their jewelry is gold instead of silver like James Avery. I have a pair of gold hoop earrings from them I really like!

I promised the kids a movie day next week. I’m looking for something PG13 with themes of magical realism, storytelling, power or narrative. Preferably takes place outside the US.

@heymrsbond Students who complain all the way through English I come back years later to tell me about all the books they’re reading, because we bond over the content of the class! You can be kind and build relationships and ALSO focus on teaching them the skills/content they need.

@heymrsbond My freshmen are usually so much different at this point in the year—but I feel like this year’s group has regressed as well. Not sure what the difference is.

@heymrsbond It’s usually “I’m sorry” followed by something like “for interrupting you while you’re talking. It was very rude of me” while looking them dead in the eyes.

@heymrsbond Getting rejected from all 8 PhD programs I applied to 6 years ago led me to teaching, & it’s only in hindsight that I see how much better this path has been for me. It really hurt at the time, but I would have missed so many more opportunities that came later if I had gotten in.

Today, I am Sisyphus (grading projects while students continue to submit late projects so that the number of projects I have left to grade continues to increase while I am grading).

@heymrsbond I started doing this at the end of the school year, and I was honestly surprised by how many more former students have started coming back to see me than previous years. It’s so much work, but I love ending the year on a positive “note.”

@heymrsbond I taught my English III students Neil Gaiman’s Credo: What I Believe one semester and I think they wrote their own afterwards
