I’m going to get so much hate for this. Prop Firms have consistency rules in place not as a way to teach traders discipline, but as way to teach traders a style of trading that supports the Prop Firm’s business model. In the real world, there is nothing wrong with making a billion dollars from one trade, and having 20 other losing trades that year as long as you came out with a profit. The real world in investing is about making money, and not a win/loss rate or profit ratio. Winning 95% of the time and making $100k is nothing compared to the person who nets one million in profits and wins 20% of the time. Most all successful Wall Street money managers will have around 2-5 HUGE wins in their career that sling shotted their career forward. Prop Firms teach traders not to trade this way, because those anomalies would make their business model fail. To be clear, you can make money both ways with Prop Firm money and normal capital. What I am saying is, they are two different games. Know which game you are playing. If you have been a Prop Trader your whole life and then you make a transition into managing free capital, you will have to unlearn the concept of consistency rules. I imagines once you get funded with real capital, most places drop the consistency rules. I see people look at some of the returns in the World Cup, and say the traders were not disciplined. You do not know how disciplined they may have actually been even if it was done in 1 trade the entire year! They might have been waiting patiently the entire year for the trade and executed everything perfectly. That is discipline worth admiring, but if you are used to the Prop Firm world, you would think one large netting trade is bad. I am here to tell you, it is not. Having one trade a year make ALL of your money is not a bad thing. Just check the Street. See what the big players do. We are all students of investing for life. We are only at war with our own Ego and Leverage. That is the battle every day. Ego and Leverage. Keep them in check.
