Back in my final year, I was knocked out of placements because the placement cell forced us to clear a Placement Eligibility Test (PET) in electronics. My interest was in software, not electronics, so I obviously failed. That was enough for them to decide I wasn’t “eligible” to even sit for placements.
Those were some of the toughest days. I remember feeling completely broken, watching people who were far behind me in skills and experience land jobs while I wasn’t even given a chance. I had projects, I had done GSoC, I had done internships,I had proof of what I could build — yet none of it mattered because of one outdated test.
Out of desperation, I even mailed the Director of the institute, showcasing my work and asking for a fair chance. Nothing changed. The system was rigid.
Fast forward to today, I am a Founding Engineer at a Y Combinator–backed startup. The very skills and passion that were ignored back then are what define my career now.
Placements didn’t make my career. In fact, the placement cell only tried to stop it. What made my career was refusing to give up, trusting my skills, and carving my own path.
To the placement cell at IIITDM Kancheepuram: stop reducing students to a single test. You’re supposed to open doors, not close them.
And to any student going through what I went through: your worth is not decided in that placement hall.
