I was going to write a post with some key highlights, and I still will add it here, but after sleeping on it I think this is the most important takeaway I have: We should probably start realising how cool it is that people like Vlad decided to come and join us in web3. What he has done, and who he has crossed paths with, by age 40 is beyond ridiculous. I know CT has mixed feelings about him: the communication style, the perp DEX rivalries. Fair enough, he does things his own way. But it's so valuable being able to see people like Vlad working in real time and relatively up close, and the ones who can set aside tribalism will learn and benefit a lot from it. People with his options rarely choose crypto. He did - because he sees the same thing we've seen since day one: the future of finance is onchain. This space has plenty of people who are only here to extract. Vlad, and the rest of the Lighter team, are part of the good guys - the ones actually building and pushing the space. Some highlights from the interview for me: Namedropping: • Ken Griffin - personally closed him at Citadel, age 18 • Vlad Tenev (Robinhood) - high school classmate at Thomas Jefferson • Adam D'Angelo (first FB CTO, Quora founder, OpenAI board) - Olympiad friend • Two Anthropic co-founders - from his physics camp • Joe Lonsdale (Palantir) - his boss at Addepar • Scott Wu (Cognition/Devin) - his co-founder before Lighter "Forrest Gump, if he had been a math person." • First week at Citadel, 2004. Vlad (18 at the time) suggests studying Madoff's track record. Ken Griffin's reply: "Oh no, that's a Ponzi. Don't worry about that one." Five years before the world found out. • Madoff survived because he gave the SEC a fake DTCC number - and nobody made the phone call. Vlad says that's what drew him to onchain finance: fraud like that can't survive when anyone can verify the trades. • When he pivoted his company into Lighter, he kept 80% of his engineers - not by dictating the new course, but by giving every engineer the chance to shape the new direction. • Lighter raised its last equity round ever. All value accrues to the token. The team is fully on the token model, and long-term he wants the token to literally become the equity once regulation catches up.
