Profits are fungible In bear markets, one of the strangest things to watch is how many traders suddenly lose the ability to think in fungible terms. They become emotionally attached to the exact bags they entered with, as if the multiple itself is unique to that asset, as if a 5x in one coin is somehow a different kind of 5x than a 5x somewhere else. That is one of the biggest bear market mistakes. In a bull market, people often accept lower quality because lower quality can still offer far more upside. That tradeoff can make sense when dispersion is wide and the market is still paying huge premiums for risk. In a bear, that spread compresses. Optionality changes. The weaker assets that once justified their existence through higher upside stop offering a meaningful advantage, while stronger assets get dragged down enough to offer similar returns with far less fragility. The trader who cannot see that keeps holding yesterday’s compromise long after the reason for the compromise disappeared. Bears are the one window where the market gives you the chance to upgrade quality without surrendering multiple. That window does not stay open for long. Once momentum returns and things start moving again, the gap reappears, and the best assets become expensive in relative terms again. The saddest outcome for someone who stayed through the bear is entering and exiting it with the same compromised positions, even though the market gave you every chance to upgrade.
