Make no mistake: destroying world-class universities, like the US just did with Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, isn't just an attack on Iran but it's literally an attack on all of us, on all of humanity. It's not Iran that "won" when Maryam Mirzakhani made her discoveries that won her a Fields Medal: it's all of mathematics, and everything mathematics is used for. Human progress won, technology won, we all won. It's the same type of stuff the Mongols did during the sack of Baghdad and their destruction of the House of Wisdom: we ALL lost something irreplaceable back then, entire fields of human knowledge set back. That's what bombing a university does. It doesn't just destroy buildings. It destroys us, all of us.

@csedachab @DanielCruz23614 @LatNewsletter Even wealthy individuals are reluctant to relocate to Vieques or Culebra. Neither island offers reliable infrastructure, despite Vieques boasting a brand-new hospital; however, few health professionals are willing to move there.

@rod_jra @pequepequepr @LatNewsletter People who already have the wealth to buy several properties at elevated prices and rent them out as a full-time job. The majority of people in Culebra who have a <30K median household income do not have that wealth. Sources: U.S. Census, AirROI

@csedachab @LatNewsletter Given the population decline on the main island, I believe there is no longer any reason to maintain those two island municipalities. It is high time to start relocating people to the main island—especially if services become more expensive.

Great work by @csedachab and @Vaquero2XL on this story. @LatNewsletter might be a small nonprofit newsroom, but our Puerto Rico work has been stellar and people are noticing. Seguimos.

Like sure if you wanted to skate by you could and outright Ds and Fs were rare outside of STEM, but the professors did not cut out their weekly 50+ page readings for the most mediocre students’s benefit

@Reality34414211 The government is doing all it can to kick people out of the archipelago and it has in fact very much succeed. There is quite a bit of housing construction, but for millionaires like the Esencia project in Cabo Rojo

100% it drives me insane when people in Puerto Rico talk about gentrification when the affordable housing crisis there is driven by short term rentals and foreign owners jacking up rents on locals and buying houses cash. That is plain colonial displacement
onion person@CantEverDie

my hot take on gentrification is the average person doesn’t understand that gentrification isn’t usually a function of individuals, but of big business restructuring neighborhoods, so gentrification takes often sounds indistinguishable from far right anti-immigrant sentiments

El Pais: Spain has closed its airspace to flights involved in Operation Epic Fury, launched by the U.S. and Israel against Iran. Not only is it prohibiting the use of the military bases in Rota (Cádiz) and Morón de la Frontera (Seville) by fighter jets or in-flight refueling aircraft participating in the attack; it is also denying airspace access to U.S. aircraft stationed in third countries, such as the United Kingdom or France, according to military sources.

@m_joel17 I agree, but there's a low-tech movement among youth. Cameras, iPods are popular. BookTok is huge. If cultural spaces are opened, literacy rates would increase along with pro-social behavior. But the thousand thinkpieces abt AI are not going to get us there.

@csedachab It depends. For those that were in elementary school during covid, that’s a reality. I’m talking based on what I’ve seen in my brother and his friends.

As a Gen Z-ish, I get so tired over the “Gen Z can’t read” discourse. It is true, but it’s not true everywhere. My Latin American friends have a thriving literary culture fueled by cheap education. They have writing circles and prizes and festivals that don’t exist in the US.

During the pandemic, I used to join online writing and photography courses from Mexico and Argentina that for ~$60 would give you four 2 hour courses. The people there were largely working class. It was a big lifeline for me in the pandemic. A similar course in the US costs $600
