Don’t choose PhD programs by rankings—they may not be a good fit for you (& everyone applies there!) Instead, focus on potential advisors. How to find them? 1. Pick your top 20-40 favorite papers 2. Find the authors in academic positions 3. Apply to their schools Good luck!🍀

Dear MAGA, friends & family. RFK Jr. wants to immediately stop the development of new drugs for cancer, Alzheimers & other illnesses for eight years. Hope your family stays healthy. Is this what you signed up for when you voted?

The DoD linked Trump’s Defense Sec to extremists. 9 tribal security chiefs banned his Homeland Security chief from their homeland. Attorneys suspended the next AG’s law license & investigated him for sex crimes The anti-DEI folk sure like white affirmative action diversity hires

@krismicinski @lorisdanto They also cut related work to the bone and more. I see reviews (from other reviewers or as an author) where a reviewer misattributes an idea from the 80s or 90s to a random 2009 workshop paper, because the citation graph isn't dense enough to trace the origins w/o oral history.

@krismicinski @lorisdanto I spend a lot of time reading *ACL papers now, which are 4 or 8 pages. Most omit key technical details for space, and then never publish full details anywhere, so the literature is filled with papers that nobody can even try to reproduce.

PACMPL (POPL, PLDI, OOPSLA, ICFP) papers should have a limit of 10 pages. We already write them this way (section 2 is basically the paper at this point) and all the details should go in appendix. Writing this way would make our work accessible outside of our community.

5 years ago, I shifted my research from restoring reach and grasp to restoring speech. My hunch was that with intracortical electrodes — which previously enabled fast cursor/arm control — we could accurately decode attempted speech. Today we've delivered. So proud of our team! 👇
Nick Card@NS_Card

Our new study is out today in the New England Journal of Medicine! We demonstrate a speech neuroprosthesis that decodes the attempted speech of a man with ALS into text with 97.5% accuracy, enabling him to communicate with his family, friends, and colleagues in his own home. 1/9

BREAKING: The Republican National Convention just announced their keynote speaker for tonight. It’s Project 2025’s lead author, Tom Homan. Make no mistake, Donald Trump’s Administration will implement Project 2025. Retweet so all Americans see this.

Kudos to the @PhillyInquirer editorial board for taking the media to the woodshed: "Apparently, it’s OK for Trump to spew nonstop nonsense, but Biden can’t ever lose his train of thought." inquirer.com/opinion/editor…

@JAldrichPL I once had a reviewer complain that a Coq formalization submitted with a paper didn't use a new version of Coq that was released after we submitted :-p But that was just silly, demanding comparison to concurrent work published after submission is totally inappropriate.

A person reviewing our paper complained that we didn't compare to a paper that was published *during* the review period. Annoying, people shouldn't do this. That's concurrent work, it should play no role in evaluating a paper.

@roopshasamanta I don't know if this asshole will see this, but defending people accused of sexism by emailing anonymous threats to two women for speaking up about it is basically the definition of sexism.

My theory — Purdue CS denied me tenure because of its shallow, insecure view of scholarship, deep dysfunction and pettiness, apathetic PL leadership, culture of silence, and, yes, sexism. It has taken me a while to call this out; I am speaking up because someone should.
Talia Ringer 🕊@TaliaRinger

A few months later, can't tell you how many stellar PL faculty candidates and potential grad students I've heard talk about not even applying to Purdue because of this honestly. Will never understand why Purdue CS would do this

This practice is unethical--it's pay to publish (and not even for open access). If a student is presenting they should pay only the student registration. Do better @ICSEconf!

Last October my department unexpectedly voted negatively against my tenure case. Since then, all of my students have had first author papers accepted - TACAS, OOPSLA, and now PLDI. I cannot begin to express how hard these last few months have been and how I feel today.
