@krismicinski @lorisdanto They also cut related work to the bone and more. I see reviews (from other reviewers or as an author) where a reviewer misattributes an idea from the 80s or 90s to a random 2009 workshop paper, because the citation graph isn't dense enough to trace the origins w/o oral history.

@krismicinski @lorisdanto I spend a lot of time reading *ACL papers now, which are 4 or 8 pages. Most omit key technical details for space, and then never publish full details anywhere, so the literature is filled with papers that nobody can even try to reproduce.

5 years ago, I shifted my research from restoring reach and grasp to restoring speech. My hunch was that with intracortical electrodes — which previously enabled fast cursor/arm control — we could accurately decode attempted speech. Today we've delivered. So proud of our team! 👇

Our new study is out today in the New England Journal of Medicine! We demonstrate a speech neuroprosthesis that decodes the attempted speech of a man with ALS into text with 97.5% accuracy, enabling him to communicate with his family, friends, and colleagues in his own home. 1/9

Kudos to the @PhillyInquirer editorial board for taking the media to the woodshed: "Apparently, it’s OK for Trump to spew nonstop nonsense, but Biden can’t ever lose his train of thought." inquirer.com/opinion/editor…

@JAldrichPL I once had a reviewer complain that a Coq formalization submitted with a paper didn't use a new version of Coq that was released after we submitted :-p But that was just silly, demanding comparison to concurrent work published after submission is totally inappropriate.

My PhD student is running a research study evaluating the quality of automatically-generated code comments. We're looking for participants to judge a number of #Python #comments on several quality measures. For more info & to participate: drexel.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3P…

Some shameful, cowardly, and unacceptable shit right here.
Roopsha Samanta@roopshasamanta
Okay, just found this gem in my inbox.
English

@roopshasamanta I don't know if this asshole will see this, but defending people accused of sexism by emailing anonymous threats to two women for speaking up about it is basically the definition of sexism.

My theory — Purdue CS denied me tenure because of its shallow, insecure view of scholarship, deep dysfunction and pettiness, apathetic PL leadership, culture of silence, and, yes, sexism.
It has taken me a while to call this out; I am speaking up because someone should.
Talia Ringer 🕊@TaliaRinger
A few months later, can't tell you how many stellar PL faculty candidates and potential grad students I've heard talk about not even applying to Purdue because of this honestly. Will never understand why Purdue CS would do this

This practice is unethical--it's pay to publish (and not even for open access). If a student is presenting they should pay only the student registration. Do better @ICSEconf!
English

@roopshasamanta I'm really sorry to hear this, it makes no sense. Your work is awesome.
