Ethnic minorities in China are learning Mandarin Chinese IN ADDITION TO their own languages. They are multilingual, and no one is restricting them from using their own languages. I visited an elementary school in Lhasa, this is their Tibetan language class. In fact, #Tibetan is written everywhere across the school, in textbooks, on blackboards, on buildings, and in students’ homework. In the school’s yard, they have a statue of the creator of the Tibetan language, Thonmi Sambhota, as well as a statue of Confucius. Just in this school, there are over 2300 kids aged 6 to 7 years old. Over 70% of them are of Tibetan ethnicity; the others are Hui, Han, and Monba ethnicities. And they are all required to take the Tibetan language class.
