We had new ferries under construction two years ago. But they ripped up that contract, at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars, and now we're waiting on new ferries that'll be years late (and their cost is already blowing out) while our old ferries crap out

Axed rescue tug leaves “irresponsible” risk ahead of rough winter for Cook Strait ferries. Bishop said that Cabinet had decided to drop the emergency rescue tug & terminate the contract early in Feb 2026 saving about $9m! We don’t want another ‘Wahine’ disaster on our hands.
