How much does it cost to buy an election in the Maldives? While the government argues a combined election would save money, state-owned companies MTCC and RDC quietly advertised 1,771 new positions in a single month costing MVR 166.3 million a year in salaries alone. That is nearly three times the cost of the 2024 parliamentary election (MVR 61.7 million). Enough to buy more than 5,000 tonnes of fuel in the middle of an oil crisis. MTCC: 1,283 positions · MVR 111.9M/year RDC: 488 positions · MVR 57.3M/year The election they want to cut costs on? MVR 61.7 million. The jobs announced ahead of the vote? MVR 166.3 million. From archives: July 2, 2024. Eight months ago, Nishal explained how the Iran-Israel ceasefire offered Maldives a critical window to prepare for looming crises: oil shock, collapsing tourism, regional threats. Today, the war has ignited. The shockwaves are hitting Maldives hard. The government just begun taking steps in response. The question remains, did we have enough time to prepare more?

Goverment taxi fleet project: Smoother rides or slower street? MTCC new taxi fleet will be launching 24/7 app-based booking, regulated fares, and integration with the RTL bus network. The most undemocratic election. Latest census shows there are 157,254 Maldivians living in Male, all directly affected by the decisions of its city council. Yet, only 45.9 percent get to vote for who takes those seats. Meanwhile, on small islands the fate of local councils is often decided by people who no longer live there. Many have migrated to Male, but return to island solely on election day to vote. The article explains how politicians use this loophole of "permanent address" for political manipulation. And how even MPs who rarely set foot on an island can still win its election. Read more: citizen.mv/7726
