My cousin is 45 years old. She is not married. Has no children. Her upbringing was tough due to circumstances of her parents upbringing- in particular her father’s. Her father and aunt were the children of a onetime Csendőr of Horthy. (Similar to the U.S. secret service) They were a very privileged family. A few years after the war, he was captured by the communists and hung as a martyr for the patriotic Hungarian people in Heroes Square. Their mother was imprisoned and the children with their grandmother sent to work on a farm for the communists for seven years. There is a lot of generational pain and trauma that lives within my cousin. She works now sporadically. She was working as a translator for mostly novels. That job has been taken from her by AI. She is a highly educated woman. She’s also worked in museums and university. She sees no good in how things are. She’s so wound into herself and rarely ventures out into the hustle of Budapest. She only socializes with her very elderly parents. She no longer has any friends as far as I know. I believe she and her parents will vote for Péter Magyar due to her circumstances not realizing her circumstances are really due to her own making. I’m sure she is not the only one who will vote this way due to their own generational trauma they carry, never allowing themselves to get close to others to have friendships or relationships. My other cousin, who lives here in the US, also has other cousins and relatives in Hungary, too. She tells us about how those relatives tell her more of what I see here, confirming my thoughts. They see more Hungarian ex-pats coming back. They see their country as safe, and on the road to becoming better off financially once again. Maybe not exactly prosperous or perfect, but on a much better road than the countries around them. They see the tourism as positive and influx of money that hasn’t been there in the past. Orbán has created a safe country, protected the heritage and culture of this small, important country. I pray the Hungarians vote for Orbán and the Fidesz party. I pray my cousin changes her life for the better and starts seeing the positives and improvements around her. Things take time to improve. Much longer for improvements than it was to destroy.
