Let’s be clear about something: the fact that unconstitutionally inhumane conditions could persist in a NYC jail (MDC) for days before the press or public knew is a product of the deliberate opacity of the federal carceral system (which should be abolished.)

People have been complaining about MDC since forever & these 2 opportunist politicians did little-to-nothing. The freezing conditions are far from the only thing wrong with that place. But as soon as the press leaves & it gets a little warmer, they'll go right back to not caring.
