We may be getting steamrolled in interleague play, but the All-Star Game is still ours

@IbelWetz It’s downstream from the philosophies. Pitchers primarily tried to avoid walks before; now the walks are an unfortunate consequence of the hunt for K%. BB% has been stable overall because hitters are swinging out of their shoes in the hunt for XBH with K% rising as a result.

This touches on something deep. Probably the most important debate in the history of baseball stats: are walks something the hitter does or something the pitcher does? x.com/GageEHC/status…
Gage@GageEHC

@IbelWetz @44dmo You’re just obtuse lol It’s absolutely, undoubtedly a skill. Or else you wouldn’t see correlation in players walk totals from year to year

@IbelWetz The thing is that all the underlying data that they based that research on is basically shit now. Pitching philosophies changed to prioritize velo and K% went up. But then hitters changed philosophies too and now high SLG is more valuable.

Remember how for 25+ years sabermetricians talked endlessly about “not making outs” and a high OBP? And now for over a decade batters make outs at a higher % than we’ve seen since before man walked on the fuckin moon. lol beyond parody. They had no clue. x.com/IbelWetz/statu…
Brian Wetzel@IbelWetz

@GageEHC Walks don’t matter nor does getting on base. 11/13 lowest league OBPs since 1969 have come since 2013. Getting into scoring position immediately is valuable. Slugging is valuable.

@g_martinis1970 Absolutely. I mean that’s not on Emo signing them but it is on him to adapt their arsenals to Sac and later Vegas.

@cuppingmaster HELLO, exactly what I was saying when they closed out Oakland, adding flyball pitchers was not the way to go, trade for Springs, sign Severino, couple of fly ball pitchers. Groundball specialists those are the pitchers they should have chased. Arnold is a groundball pitcher.

Emo and the A’s pitching philosophy has been stuck in the Coliseum era. They can’t just throw any old guy out there and let the stadium do the rest like they used to. They have to draft, develop, and refine pitchers knowing each needs an arsenal that fits a high HR% environment.

@Brownie243496 @BNightengale Please tell me more about that Royals vs. Pirates WS were going to see this year. Or was it Reds vs. Guardians. I forgot.

@cuppingmaster @BNightengale Revenue sharing is enforced by rule, both NY teams, Boston, among other large markets have to share their revenue. The Dodgers get a legal exception from the court. MLB has had more different title winners than any sport with a cap. A cap will solidify their dominance not take it

MLBPA interim executive Bruce Meyer insists that all 30 teams have the ability to compete now with this same CBA but many teams choose not to contend, saying MLB's proposals are the "ultimate excuse not to compete.''

Getting tired of hearing about the burnt out warehouse in Boyle Heights. Yes, it really sucks and is stinky and completely unideal. But the only thing to do is to wait it out until the cleanup is done.

@Brownie243496 @BNightengale Whatever revenue they don’t have to share will still outstrip everyone. You can’t make things more egalitarian (when LA is a much larger metro area than KC) without forcing it by rule. Otherwise it’s just NY, LA, Chicago and then everyone else.

@cuppingmaster @BNightengale The Dodgers have that revenue because of the court order. Ordinarily, a much larger chunk of their revenue would be shared with teams like the Royals, Pirates, Marlins, etc. But the bankruptcy court prevented that so the Dodgers get to keep it instead. Temporary problem.

@Brownie243496 @BNightengale There is no chance the Royals will ever have even near the Dodgers revenue under the current system. Zero. The Dodgers have a financial advantage that is unprecedented in the sport.

@cuppingmaster @BNightengale That's because the Dodgers don't have to share as much of their revenue as any other team by court order, which has an expiration date. A salary cap is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. There are many teams that could do what the Dodgers do, and many have before.

Hubbs leading the pitching staff as a whole maybe kills two birds with one stone inasmuch as his bullpen replacement could try establishing some clear roles.
