My dad used to call periods “gross.” Said men shouldn’t hear about “women’s stuff.” Last week, my 12-year-old brother asked me what periods were like. One of his friends had gotten hers at school, and he didn’t want to embarrass her. So I explained it. Cramps. Mood swings. Pain. Chocolate helps. From the kitchen, my dad shouted: “Stop talking about that disgusting crap. Boys don’t need to know about it.” Before I could respond, my little brother looked him dead in the eye and said: “That’s why mom divorced you.” The whole house went silent. My dad froze for a second… then walked away without saying a word. My brother turned back to me like nothing happened and asked: “So… what kind of chocolate should I buy her?”
