This trope about the “carefree” islander harkens back to broader colonialist narratives and fed into the idea of the “noble savage,” which was long used to help justify the colonial domination of entire populations. The irony of seeing this logic resurface in 2026, by a self-styled anti-imperialist, in an attempt to justify his luxury regime-sponsored trip to Cuba is beyond parody at this point.
