I worked in equity research for years. Let’s stop pretending retail voting rights were ever the thing that mattered.
Your broker holds the shares. Your broker submits the vote. You get a proxy email you ignore. In many cases, the shares retail owns don’t even have meaningful voting power.
The idea that “real” stocks are defined by your ability to vote is fiction.
What actually kept management honest wasn’t your ballot. It was market scrutiny. It was us - the analysts. It was the threat of a downgrade, a tougher note, a worse narrative, and a subsequent sell-off.
That was the accountability mechanism.
So when people say tokenised stocks “aren’t real” because you can’t vote, I think: you never really could.
