Where grocery stores are located is not random. In this R.E.A.L. post, we map grocery store locations across California and link them to neighborhood demographics. Premium grocers cluster in high-income, highly educated renter areas, while store closures disproportionately affect lower-income communities. A small data look at how retail geography reflects urban inequality. realab.blog/p/the-geograph…

AI will not reduce burnout in academia; it will compress it. If writing, coding, and first drafts take a fraction of the time, the equilibrium just shifts, the bar moves, expectations adjust, and deadlines tighten. Output increases, review cycles accelerate, and “quick revisions” multiply. The constraint was never typing speed; it was attention and judgment. AI relaxes the production constraint, not the evaluation constraint, so burnout simply arrives sooner.

Almost time to pedal (a lot) 🤟 "In just a few weeks, you’ll be signing in for the 2026 Absa Cape Epic. By now, the training is done. The miles are in your legs. What’s left is the mindset, the focus, and the final details that get you to that start line ready for the week ahead. Whenever someone asks me how to approach this race, my answer is simple: respect it."

Toronto PhD Sijie Lin on human adaptation to AI responses.
Alex Imas@alexolegimas

Three cheers for equilibrium! Great JMP from @Sijie_Lin741 showing how people adapt to the evolution of AI models. Discussions of AI often assume that either the AI landscape or the humans that interact with them are "static"--the former does not respond to changes in the latter, or vice versa. But the truth is that people change their behavior as their environment changes. Sijie looks at Midjourney data to show that people learn and adapt to new model releases, changing how they prompt as part of the creative process. "Counterfactual shows that without human adaptation, users need three times more prompts to achieve data-observed results." Yes, the AI landscape is a moving target, but so are the people who use it. sijie-lin.com/files/JMP.pdf

New on R.E.A.L. 🏠 How has residential mobility changed over the past decade? In our latest post, we use U.S. Census SIPP data to track transitions between owning and renting across three panels (2013–2023). Key takeaways: 📉 Owner-to-owner moves dropped sharply in 2021–2023, consistent with the mortgage rate lock-in effect — millions of homeowners locked in at historic lows now face steep penalties for moving. 📉 Renter-to-renter mobility declined ~40% in under a decade. 🔍 A surprising finding: own-to-rent transitions are more frequent than expected, but a deeper look reveals they're largely driven by young adults leaving family homes — not homeowners selling to become renters. The distinction between individual-level and household-level data matters enormously for interpreting these trends. One of the authors here. It is not true that papers are publishable simply because they conclude that gambling is harmful. Nor is it our intention to present a biased analysis (there is no incentive for us to do so). In response to your concern about the different results for credit card delinquencies, note that we have revised the definition of online treatment in the new draft. In the current draft, it is labeled Retail-to-Online and defined over a set of states that already permit retail gambling (which is very different than the previous definition). This design allows us to identify the incremental effect of introducing online gambling in states already having retail access.

We often hear that a negative effect of legalized sports gambling is a rise in consumer bankruptcies. A concern I had is, given that the identification comes from staggered rollouts of state legalizations, with effectively a handful of observations, how robust is that result? And how large?
