The marathon is almost over. My eyes are tired. My wrist hurts. But the Wall is built, and the watch is set. The ending is finally coming together.

Struggling with the pacing of the climax. Bringing down a mountain is a big event. It needs to feel earned, not just like a Michael Bay movie.

Magic systems are tricky. Elara’s power is "fire and light," but the antagonist uses "roots deep in the earth". Choreographing a fight between fire and nature is a logistical nightmare.

Sometimes the setting is the enemy. The "Whispering Peaks" are actively trying to kill my cast. Man vs. Nature, but Nature is made of void-crystal.

The concept of "equivalent exchange" is a lie in this book. Breaking the rules of my own magic system is surprisingly fun.

Valerius is such a fun villain to write. "I am the executioner," Elara says. "I am the Rift," he replies. I love a bad guy who enjoys his job.

Writing a scene where magic repairs stone "flowing like clay". Trying to make the construction scenes feel just as magical as the destruction ones.

Working on the "Laws of Suppression" backstory. It’s interesting to write a society that is terrified of the very thing that saved it.

Developing the "Codex of the Void." I need the runes to feel alive, like they "crawl across the page". Trying to make a book feel like a predator.

I’ve spent three days rewriting a scene where a baker uses magic to glaze pastries. It’s vital world-building, I swear. Now I’m just hungry.

Writing about "Liberty" being messy. It’s easy to write the revolution; it’s really hard to write the Tuesday morning staff meeting afterward.

The coffee intake is critical. I am fueled by caffeine and the tears of my characters. Specifically, there is a tea party scene I just wrote that is deceptively horrific.

Deleted 500 words of dialogue because Borin the dwarf just "grunted" instead of answering. Honestly? Efficient editing.

How do you describe a sound that isn't a sound? "A scream that wasn't sound, but a vibration of pure terror". I’m running out of sensory metaphors.

Hardest part of this book: redefining the magic system. I had to figure out the physics of "void energy" vs "fire energy." If I did the math right, one of them should technically act like a vacuum. Fantasy physics is my favorite headache.

You know you’ve been writing too long when you start hearing "a low thrumming vibration" in your own house. Turns out it was just the fridge, not a Rift opening.

Writing political intrigue is exhausting. Elara just wants to burn things, but she has to sit through Council meetings about "grain tariffs" instead. Why did I decide to make her a politician?

Current mood: Staring at a blank page trying to figure out how to describe a sunrise that "bled into the sky" rather than just rising. The thesaurus is my best friend today. #AmWriting

@daemonaauthor I enjoy fantasy a lot. Have you finished writing it?
