A company isn’t a family. It’s a team. And teams win when they make the best possible decisions, not when they protect people’s feelings.
Great product teams don’t get attached to ideas. They get attached to outcomes. The best founders kill their darlings fast. The worst ones let their pet projects drag the company down. It’s not personal. It’s just what the job demands.
The moment you start treating a company like a family, you introduce dysfunction. Families protect weak links. Teams replace them. Families prioritize harmony. Teams prioritize performance. Families hold onto traditions. Teams evolve to win. If you want to build something great, drop the idea that your company is your baby.
A company is not a reflection of you. It is not your identity. It is not something you nurture. It is a machine designed to produce results. The moment you get emotional about it, you stop thinking clearly. You start making choices to satisfy your ego instead of the market. You hold onto the wrong people, the wrong bets, and the wrong version of the company.
If you ever catch yourself saying, “But we put so much time into this” or “We owe it to them to keep them around” or “I just feel like we should keep pushing on this idea,” stop. Those are emotional arguments. They have nothing to do with what is best for the company.
The best founders have one rule. No emotions in product. No emotions in hiring. No emotions in decision-making. Just clarity.
Have you ever seen emotions destroy a company?
