"my strength is that i've always viewed technology from a liberal arts perspective." this is the entire premise of this account. i'm no steve jobs, but there are still *very very few* ppl in technology that understand culture, & there are even less ppl in culture that understand technology. this intersection is the most powerful modern force on the planet especially with ai. it has a deep holistic & emotional impact on the minutiae to the momentous aspects of normal ppl's life.

was talking to my friend about how most ppl waste decades chasing borrowed strengths trying to look “well rounded”. the worse culprits are big co’s who institutionalize this nonsense at scale.. they literally force you to grind on your weaknesses just to climb the promo ladder. like they even have checklists & middle managers trained to sniff out gaps & make sure you’re baseline mediocre at everything before letting you through to the next level. hated every part of this, absolute trash way of living life.

now imagine this on a brain where the prefrontal cortex has barely started developing, where dopamine sensitivity is an order of magnitude higher than adults, and every neural pathway is being wired from scratch in real time thats a toddler with an ipad giving a 2 year old short-form video is for all intents and purposes indistinguishable from giving them cocaine. same reward pathway, same dopamine hijack, zero executive function to regulate it, and a brain that won't even finish developing before being irreparably compromised ipad kids are brain damaged and the parents who did it to them for a "quiet dinner" (read: lazy) should be treated exactly the way we would treat anyone who gives cocaine to toddlers
Nicholas Fabiano, MD@NTFabiano

Addiction to short-form videos reduces brain activity in the frontal lobe weakening the ability to focus.

Thanks James, that's very kind. I love London and the UK, and want to see it do well on the world stage. I also wish my long time colleague Dave Silver (we've worked together since our student days at Cambridge!) all the best with his exciting new venture! This is how thriving ecosystems are built.
James Dacombe@jamesdacombe

Two observations: 1. @demishassabis has done more for the UK by demanding DeepMind remain headquartered in London than arguably any Briton in recent decades (never mind all of his other achievements for the world). His actions will single-handedly account for the majority of the UK’s future growth, if the politicians can manage to stay out of the way. What a legend. 2. Sequoia appear to be back and playing aggressively again.

Phone addiction is the everyday person’s version of David vs Goliath. For the past dozen years, 20,000 caltech machine learning PhDs have spent every hour of every day — to get you to spend one additional marginal hour on their platform. Hundreds of billions of dollars of technocapital are pitted against you.

the more I log on here the more im convinced the text based social networks like X have one-shotted lonely and introverted men if you put a normal person with friends, who consumes lightly on the other social network on here they're in hell: repulsed, just filtering through a timeline where its impossible to decipher ai, lies, bots, propaganda and hubris from each other that no sane person would ever refresh, but for a personality type without much else, who doesn't have the warmth of casual video shares and a dozen booming group chats - its brain heroin that makes them feel accomplished and superior while they lose themselves in the process

Feel a real reason behind the sound of Esdeekid et al hitting so well comes down to broader trends of dopamine hacking and short form content. Likely unintentional. But something about the sound tickles that same easy dopamine itch. Almost forced into synthetic good feeling

I think the average ~18-45 year old man could run a sub 20:00 5k and sub 6:00 mile with 2-3 years of good, consistent training and nutrition. And it would take no more 3-5 hours of training per week.

this is a peak example of actually doing great things in your life. an excellent life should have many dimensions. but to lead such a life, you must become the person who deserves it. It will be hard. you must face your fears. you must be brave and never give up your optimism. you must prove discipline in moments where comfort seems justified. you must keep focus in a world of distractions around every corner. you must disappoint people in life and say no. you must program your mindset with valuable books and journals that remind you of your life's mission. you must understand that you can lead this life. this future exists out there. all you have to do is make this potential future real. and in that moment when you realize you are a winner, you will smile. you have everything you need. make it real

I highly encourage any one under the age of 30 to pick up skiing/snowboarding. It will most likely change every single one of your lives. You will go on trips around the world youve never imagined solely for that. You will have snow trips with friends youll never forget. Youll teach your kids at a very young age. Youll have an annual week-long snow trip with your family to your favorite mountain. You will feel the joy of living and be invigorated by it. You will look forward to these events throughout the week. Youll look forward to Winter in the Summer. You should pick up skiing/snowboarding. Thank me later.
