19th century Denmark and 21st century Canada share many similarities. Chief among them, their typical winter climates, their real or perceived status as cultural backwaters, and their geographical proximity to more boisterous nation states/juggernauts.
SK’s epitaph (from Hans Adolph Brorson, 1694-1764) reads (roughly):
In a little while
I shall have won
Then the whole battle
Will at last be done
And I may rest
In bowers of roses
And unceasingly
And unceasingly
Speak with my Jesus.
11 November marks 169 years since Søren Aabye Kierkegaard (1813-1855) passed away at Fredericks Hospital, København, and 2 years since I was able to visit SK’s (after whom my son takes his baptismal name) final resting place at Assistens Kirkegård with my father.
