Voyager 1, launched Sept 5, 1977, is furtherest human artifact from Earth, over 15B miles, 24B kms. Magnificent remote debugging has it back sending understandable data after 6 month outage. Flight Data Subsystem computer, 7400 series TI chips (see image), with 8K 16 bit words of RAM, all code volatile so directly wired to power from radio isotope thermal generator. If I interpret multiple stories correctly, one of its CMOS 4,096 bit (= 512byte) memory chips flaked out. Prep code for data to transmit was there. JPL was still able to poke memory with code elsewhere in memory, and so spread data prep functionality around in unused little blocks of memory elsewhere, and patched call instructions elsewhere. [And BTW, the FDS still actively using a magnetic tape recorder for large data storage.] Now sending good data back again 46.5 years into its mission. jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasas-voy…

An article about my vociferous support of open source AI platforms. Demis Hassabis, Dario Amodei, and Sam Altman (among others) have scared governments about what they claim are risks of AI-fueled catastrophes. I know that Demis, at least, is sincere in his claims, but I think those claims are incorrect and counterproductive. The inevitable *effect*, intentional or not, if governments believe those claims would be a regulatory capture profiting their companies. I do think that the short-term societal dangers of proprietary AI systems that will soon mediate everyone's digital diet are considerably higher than any imagined catastrophe caused by the misuse of open source AI systems. And I believe that the benefits of open source AI platforms in terms of progress, safety, economic development, and cultural diversity are overwhelming. businessinsider.com/sam-altman-and…

This collection of papers gives a (very good) glimpse at some of the *essential* perspectives artistic collaborations can bring to roboticists work. I really enjoyed co-editing this with @damith, Christian Kroos and Elizabeth Jochum. ------------ Cet ense…lnkd.in/eSHdRctA
