48 hours of hell and 13 days of grieving.
Spent the last 13 days in Brazil during an incredibly unexpected trip.
Nicole and I received word that her Dad was placed in the ICU on the afternoon of the 29th.
I reacted by immediately purchasing her a ticket to Brazil….
Later in the day I was called by my brother in law stating that it best if I come too.. I proceeded to immediately cancel all of my obligations and reach out to those who contacted me for the HCS Salt Lake City to inform them of my withdrawing.
I quickly worked to purchase my next day ticket to Brazil, as closely seating myself to my wife as possible for the trip on each flight.
Less than an hour after booking my ticket to Brazil we received word that we lost my father in law…. my wife’s dad. One of the best men I’ve been fortunate to meet.
Nicole’s dad was my favorite person and best friend in Brazil. I’ve never met a more positive or impactful man in all my years on this earth.
Regardless of our language differences in the beginning we would spend hours using google translate while simply sharing a drink and conversing.
Patience and positivity. That is what he exuded.
In a matter of hours our world turned upside down. In just 2 months they were to visit us in St. Louis where we had tickets purchased to an F1 race (which was a big passion of his) which we would all go and experience together.
The following 48 hours put us in sheer hell as we attempted to travel in under 24 hours from St. Louis to Brazil.
Brazilian customs are that funerals occur the day after passing. Nicole’s mom and siblings put off the funeral until Sunday so we could arrive in time for it.
On our connecting flight in São Paulo we received a notification it had been canceled by @LATAM_BRA with every preceding flight booked or canceled that day. Despite hours of discussions and a run around between 4 counters (and recollecting our bags) we were without a resolution.
I opted to begin the process to rent a vehicle, which would then put a 10-12 hour drive onto our trip, but would put us on time for the funeral. I explained to my wife that we were making for her daddy’s funeral. Nothing was stopping us.
Thankfully after speaking with the Latam Airlines store I offered to purchase new tickets entirely. Because our current tickets were only good from location to location and could not be re-routed to a different airport. (As outrageous as it sounds this is what we were told for 4 hours)
After securing tickets my wife and I were able to make it to her city at just after 11:00pm. Between nerves and sheer exhaustion we did not sleep well, perhaps 2 hours.
The following morning the funeral began at 6:00am and lasted until approximately 12:00pm.
During that time…I have never in my life seen more beautiful floral arrangements. With more and more and more arriving throughout the day. Easel after easel being added. Each new arrangement bringing tears to my eyes because it re-affirmed what I knew, that her father was a man who was second to none.
Then the stories came. Each person sharing how incredible he was. This is the person I would speak to the most during each visit in Brazil, despite us not sharing a common language until I learned Português years later. Even then my Portuguese is rough and unpolished, this never mattered to him. He would be my translator, simplifying the Português I heard into ways he knew I would understand.
I am happy to call him my father in law and my friend. A person I hope to be like one day, and a person I wish my children could have met.
This is my regret, that my wife and I were unable to give my mom or her dad grandchildren before they left us….because words will never do their kindness, selflessness, or positivity justice.
They would have been even better grandparents than parents. If even possible.
I am always preaching love and positivity…but the positivity part is hard to live by right now.

I’d be lying if I said it didn’t still take a lot of work, every day.. what trans youth and trans folx read and see on the internet matters. The company you keep, matters. Hold people accountable to their words and their hate.

Trans youth are nearly 8x more likely than their peers to attempt suicide. These kind of numbers are truly heartbreaking. Influencers have enormous platforms and the choice to use theirs to bully such a vulnerable group with unrelenting cruelty is despicable, cowardly behavior.

You can disagree on something, it's natural. People also can make mistakes. It doesn't mean that one person is a moron. Nobody is perfect...
